Usually through connections to people in the business in the widest sense of the word. My friends flatmate is friends with a Rockette, so my friend got to taken as a +1 on occasion.
There are things like student rush or Will-Call-Club you can join, that will sometimes give out comps.
But I think the most common is knowing someone.

I get my comps from clubfreetime.com. Just make sure you join for a year - it's the cheapest membership there ($19.95)
