But "couldn't" can certainly mean it's too painful to do so. I've suffered from migraines, it can indeed be THAT painful.

And "party" has lots of meaning...doesn't mean she's going to drink and expose herself to debauchery.

Going to the after parties is just as much "work" and making connections as it is partying. She probably saw all the flak BWW people gave Karen and didn't want to be bashed for not "meeting her public" when THEY wanted to see her.

Though I agree with you about after parties being work and networking events, I doubt she saw anything on BWW that influenced her decision to go. If she didn't go, I am sure people would have understood considering her situation.
