Paramount Pictures re-releasing GREASE to movie theaters in July ~

In the 12 years since it's last re-issue a whole new generation of kids has discovered it. I think it's smart of Paramount to do this if only for this new generation of fans to get the chance to experience the film in a movie theater.

I went to the last reissue over at the Chelsea cinema for the 20th Anniversary and it was jam packed and the reaction to it was just phenomenal: we're talking clapping, laughing, singing...people really have a good time with this film.

I remember singing that song and saying that word in front of my mother when I was eleven. We had a very intersting discussion after that haha.

I was 9 when the film was originally released. My dad normally dictated what we went to see, which meant that I sat through a lot of James Bond, Horror, Adventure, Bruce Lee and Exploitation crap.

The only way I convinced him to take us to see GREASE was to tell him that it was about gangs in the 1950s. When the singing started he had a WTF reaction, he had no choice but to sit there and endure it. He was not a happy camper.

Whenever HBO would show it my Mom would switch the channel whenever the scene wit Rizzo and Kenickie came up in the car with the condom. She did it every time.

^ The Rizzo/Kenickie scene in the car was actually cut from at least one of the home movie versions and most of the TV versions. I didn't even know it existed until a few years ago when I finally bought it on DVD.

Color me surprised!

If you think about it GREASE, is not really a film you take a 10 year old to see. Even though most of it would go over kids' heads it's still there and questions of "Mommy what does "fongool" mean" and "Mommy, what did Kenickie break in the car?" are bound to arise not to mention that Greased Lightning is not a song I would want a 10 year old to be singing out loud.

Maybe Paramount should re-think this. I mean, you're going to get kids singing Greased Lightining out loud. Oh dear.

Since I was obsessed with Rizzo and every word she uttered, I remembered asking my mom what a "gangbang" was since Rizzo refers to it when all the guys are in the car with her and Kenickie. My mother said, "its when a lot of boys are vying for a girl's affections." Isn't that delicate indeed.

As far as needing a theatrical release to expose a new generation to "Grease" it truly isn't necessary anymore. Films being discovered by people is not dependant on such things. Most of the young kids in my neighborhood and my goddaughter know Grease from it being on TV all the time. In truth, younger people probably wouldn't go to a theatre to see something they can watch "at home". I think a theatrical re-release is for older fans and possibly some young people they drag along.

I don't know. I'm 19 and would really enjoy seeing it in the theater. I guess it's just a matter of those who really love the movie and want to see it on the big screen.

I remember when "Grease" premiered at The Mann Chinese back in the day, and Mayor Tom Bradley declared it "Grease Day."

The reviews for the film were pretty bad, which is so funny since it's now considered a film classic. I've never been one to have a review influence my opinion on if I'll see a film or a play/musical.

neal, mamma mia was pretty much panned too and it became an international sensation. it just goes to show the power of music and people's desire for some escapist fun.
