It's official!!!: http://www.playbill.com/news/article/123985.html
But, why is this film in the "Spectrum: Documentary Spotlight"? All of the other films with it are non-fiction docs. Shouldn't it be in the dramatic Spectrum films section?
Also, they keep referring to it as a "documentary". Isn't it only a filmed version of the stage show (a la "Rent: Live On Broadway"), and not a behind-the-scenes creation of the show doc?

Posted: 12/4/08 at 5:56pmI'm willing to bet that there might be more than just the performance to this. You can even say that "Passing Strange" itself is a documentary, albeit dramatized. I have no problem with the categorization.

I am actually really glad that it's not just a taping of the show (though i hope there IS that, of course). i think a documentary of the last day of a broadway musical (perhaps as a microcosm for something greater?) would be such an interesting subject: all those emotions, and add to that the personal nature of the show to Stew and Heidi, it could make for some fascinating cinema.
either way, i hope there's LOTS of footage of the show, and if it gets released on DVD i want a full taping :)

Posted: 12/4/08 at 7:15pmI think I posted back when it was being filmed that Spike Lee was taking it to Sundance. My friend spoke to him the night before it closed and Mr. Lee told him that's what his plans were for the film.

Posted: 12/8/08 at 4:03pmJudging by this article, I think they're trying to lean more towards a theatrical release of some kind: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/culturemonster/2008/12/nearly-a-quarte.html
