Passion Live at the Lincoln Center

I know that they aired this on PBS, and I've searched both PBS and the boards and not found this out, but do they plan on releasing it or reairing it anytime soon. I would love to know so I can finally own it. Thanks!

I don't think they will be re-airing it anytime soon (it was only supposed to air twice ever) and they won't be releasing it. Check and see if any of your friends recorded it. I think that's your best bet.

I didn't know about this, who starred on this production?

Patti LuPone as Fosca - Audra McDonal as Clara - Michael Creveras(sorry - sp?!) as Georgio. It is a very enjoyable concert - as anything with this wonderful cast would be

Thanks, chenofan!
I'm not sure how I feel about LuPone doing Fosca, Donna Murphy is my one and only.

Wow this concert was the best event, other than the American Musical I ever saw on PBS. It was great and although Patti was great, Donna is the one and only. Despite Patti supposedly having been the pick to originally play her.
Audra was the most divine Clara but I still like Jere and Donna better. That original triumvirate was pure perfection

re: Passion Live at the Lincoln Center

I was not aware of that rumor about Patti. I know Sondheim has repeatedly said that Donna Murphy's audition is the best audition he's ever seen, apparently Murphy WAS Fosca. Plus, Murphy said she was going through some hard event in her life that made her relate a lot to the character. I just think this is Murphy's Mamma Rose, it's going to take many generations before anyone match her performance.

re: Passion Live at the Lincoln Center

I agree...I think it would be difficult for anyone short of Meryl Streep perhaps to give as compelling and fully realized a Fosca as Donna did. Everything Donna did was so carefully chosen and so specific, she really did create Fosca...not Donna Murphy playing Fosca. Her work on the DVD is nothing short of stunning.

I liked that Patti made distinct choices and was brave enough to take Fosca in a completely different direction, but I thought as the whole, her Fosca was not as strong as Donna Murphy's.

I do have a sort of new obsession with Donna Lynne Champlin after seeing her amazing focus and dedication to her role in Sweeney and would like to see her give Fosca a go.

re: Passion Live at the Lincoln Center

ahhh! I saw it closing night front and center.

amazing show.

I also just met and talked to Michael Cerveris on Wednesday - when I told him I saw it from the front row and thought it was beyond wonderful...his reaction was "I was probably spitting all over you" and a friendly laugh.

which was true..
but thats okay :)

re: Passion Live at the Lincoln Center

Something about contracts with Lincoln Center prevents PBS from airing it again or releasing it on DVD.

I was worried about Lupone as Fosca, but let me tell you, she was amazing! Much different than Murphy, bigger, and more opera influenced. A divine performance.

re: Passion Live at the Lincoln Center

let me just say that i'm a huge fan of LuPone and my memory of her in this role (after not have seen it for a long time) was that she didn't a good job. To my disappointment, her Fosca made me laugh rather than cry.

re: Passion Live at the Lincoln Center

Her Fosca is larger than life, which at first, was hard to handle. But her "I Wish I Could Forget You" made the whole performance complete for me. She performs Passion like a grand opera, which for that setting, worked for me.

I agree that Patti LuPone's performance was too big for the character of Fosca. I enjoyed that performance but I think that that role belongs to Donna Murphy.

Thank you guys so much for your help and everything. I loved Donna but I really enjoyed Judy Kuhn interpretation at the Kennedy Center. It is stuck in my head the past few weeks listen to the OBCR I can't help but remember Kuhn's voice

re: Passion Live at the Lincoln Center

The Kennedy Center production was indeed divine. The shutters during "Happiness" with the light pouring onto the bed. The departure from the norm- with Michael Cerveris naked. And Judy Kuhn was marvelous.

I LOVED the concert, beautifully done by Michael and Audra. Patti didn't bother me either, I thought she did well.
If Percy Blakeney were in Les Mis....

Percy: Sink me! If it isn't Javvurt!
Javert: Zsah-vair, it's pronounced Zsah-vair.
Pecry: But it's spelled J-A-V-E-R-T Javvurt.
Javert: Repeat after me Zsah...Zsah....
Percy: Oh! Zsa-Zsa! Like the Gabor sister! Well I personally have always prefered Eva.

re: Passion Live at the Lincoln Center

There's a Kennedy Center recording? I can imagine Judy Kuhn didn't really need make-up to play Fosca though (OK, I know that was mean). I don't really like Kuhn's voice at all, I don't think I'd like her Fosca. On the other hand, I admire LuPone very much but I can't see her doing justice to Fosca. I wish Murphy sort of toured with the show or something, I'm sure she's over Passion though, I'm glad all her subsequent performances have been as seamless.

re: Passion Live at the Lincoln Center

No the Sondheim Celebration performances at the Kennedy Center weren't recorded on a CD or DVD for purchase. I believe a local DC Library (blanking on the name right now) may have archived copies to look at for research purposes.

re: Passion Live at the Lincoln Center

Just one man's opinion here - but I thought the Lincoln Center thing was horrendous. LuPone looked like she took depressants, the others seemed grossly mis-cast. Really nothing seemed to be able to redeem that evening. One of Sondheim's most beautiful scores sung by talented people who wanted to do a superb job but came in way below (well at least my expectations).

I really love Passion. I saw it with Donna Murphy and what's-his-name, and haven't heard a recording since them that's been able to compare (and that's including Friedman/Ball who I love in WIW, but also I thought were mis-cast in this show)
