re: Passion Live at the Lincoln Center

i hate to say it but i slightly agree with chernjam. I remembered the show as being great when i saw on PBS for the first time. Then i tried to get it and couldn't find it anywhere. after the memory of the show began to slip away, i got the dvd and became obsessed. Once i saw the LuPone version again I was utterly disappointed. By the acting, the weirdness, the singing, the staging, the cuts, which may have brought more life to the show. It justs didn't seem like they'd prepared enough for it to be seen. It could have been a lot better and i think if LuPone had played Fosca and calmly as she did with Lovett int he new revival. She would have been good. Forgive me if you're a LuPone fan, i love her too, but she just didn't work as fosca.

I taped it. It's not a bad production. I really haven't watched since though.

re: Passion Live at the Lincoln Center

As I said before, I don't think Patti was as strong as Donna, but I really enjoyed the production. It was was responsible for getting me into Passion. I'd seen the DVD in high school, and was strangely uneffected by it, though I was impressed by Donna's performance.

I only watched it because I knew Audra was going to be in it, and lo and behold I was drawn in to Fosca's world. It made going back to the original production all the more wonderful.

My main problem with the concert was the dynamic between Fosca and Clara. Audra's Clara was more exhuberant, desperate, and warmer (though in some ways more self-ish) than Marin's Clara and Patti's Fosca was somewhat more aloof than Donnas, like her needs were less pressing than Donna's. Perhaps this is because I'm an Audra fan, but it almost made Clara as heart-tugging as Fosca. There was more desparation coming from Clara than Fosca and I guess that's what threw me off a bit.

re: Passion Live at the Lincoln Center

What it's so great and yet difficult about this show is that it is so well-written and there's so much subtext in the songs that the actresses playing Clara and Fosca have so many choices they could make with those characters, but the wrong choice might shift the whole balance. What was so amazing about Donna Murphy in my opinion is that she was very manipulative, obsessive, and she hid behind her self-pity and ugliness, but she drew you as an audience to be on her side even though you knew she was so desperate, it was something ingenous she did, I don't know how she did it. Marin's Clara was great too because you really understood her choices and you felt for her too, I like what she did with the role.
