Still a relative newcomer to NYC, I was going to see the Sondheim tribute at Carnegie Hall. Before the show started, I left at the stage door drawing of Patti (I know, I know . . .) and a note telling her that "Evita" had been my first Broadway show on my first trip to NY as a teen.
Two days later, I received a note thanking me for my drawing and telling me that it was "already at the framer's, along with your note . . . I know I gave a better performance because of it."
I've always treasured the note--and I've always taken credit for Patti's knockout performance of "Being Alive"!

And it seems we'll all have to wait a while before we can write Patti again. She's suspended the Ask Patti section of her website:
"Dear Dolls,
After over 5 years of answering your very astute, very funny, very supportive inquiries, I must suspend the Ask Patti section of my website for awhile at least. "Gypsy" takes all of my energy.
If you're interested, watch the website for my closing night in "Gypsy" and my future appearances.
Be well. I will miss talking with you.
Love, Patti"

Patti's official closing night in Gypsy (I emailed her a couple weeks ago) is March 1, 2009. Although I'm not sure if that's what you were asking :)

Posted: 9/9/08 at 12:44pmThe thing I've always loved about PLP is, unlike other celebrities/divas she seems like a real person. She flosses, she farts, she's cranky, she's nice, she's not nice.... just like the rest of us :)

I have loved her since I was child and got the EVITA CDs. Then LIFE GOES ON on TV.
When I got the chance to see her in GYPSY June 17th, the first performance after her Tony win, I stagedoored of course. Being the ever vigilent and resourceful woman I am, I positioned myself right at the front of the barricade on the left side right by the door. When she came out, I was one of the first people she got to. She smiled right at me, bent her head and began to sign my PLAYBILL. To my surprize, she asked me, "Did you like it?" I replied, "No" in a very deadpan voice. She looked up at me and our eyes met. She had a perplexed look on her face. "I loved it. It was one of the best night of my life," I added softly, smiling and nodding. She began to chuckle and grin, obviously pleased at my attempt at humor. She winked at me and proceeded to slide my PLAYBILL back to sign the cover of the glossy picture program for me, too... I didn't ask and I sure wasn't expecting that. I was simply using it as a "table" for her and the PLAYBILL... Wonderful moment

The company I worked for was presenting Patti's one woman show "Matters of the Heart" show as part of our Broadway Season. After the opening night performance, we all went out to dinner together to celebrate. Patti was very gracious and nice to all of us. We had a great time at dinner. She even met up with one of the guys from my office for drinks in New York when he came in to the city to see Sweeney Todd.

Bwaylvsong- Yes, I did go to LaGuardia!! The only one from my little Catholic school in Brooklyn that got accepted. I was so excited....
