Okay, so I love Patti LuPone. I also tend to love the stories about her as well. I searched, but nothing came up in the first couple of pages, so I figured that it might be fun to just compile all of the stories in one thread.
So, let me know. What are your favorite stories? Something she has stolen? Said at a stagedoor? Kicked off the stage?
Let us know.
Oh goodness...not another Patti threat. She's a first class grade A bitch. And totally fake when she is being "nice" to fans.
Patti LuPone grinds her coffee with her own teeth and boils the water with her own rage.
Don't tell her I told you this, but once she was headed for hell. But, when she got to Satan's door, she heard me blowin on my horn once more, so she said, "Satan, farewell."
Can you belive her? The nerve!
But now she's all ready to fly. Yes, to fly higher and higher. 'Cause she's been through the brimstone, and even been through the fire.
I even heard she purged her heart, and her soul too.

I'm working a show now with Daniel Benzali who was in the original Sunset Boulevard with her on the west end and Evita almost a decade before that.
And a couple of days ago at rehearsal he was talking about the GINORMOUS change between Patti during Evita, and Patti during Sunset Boulevard. During Evita he said she was this quiet young girl who became one of his best friends. They had kind of lost contact over the year but then he did SB with her, and she had COMPLETELY changed. He said they were and are currently still great friends, but that it was very interesting seeing the change in her between shows.

What a DIVA!!!
I wrote her once & she sent me a very nice note back which I still have.
I said "hello" to her on the street once in NY and she punched me in the face and stoled me wallet.
She has mellowed.
Imagine the offspring of Patti & Mandy.
I'd rather not.
Kind of like the mutant baby in "It's Alive"

One time, while Patti was performing in Title Of Show, she told the audience that she will be taking a shotgun to every phone that goes off during the show! 5 phones got destroyed that night. 3 Iphones. Then someone bitch-slapped her and Patti pulled out her Tuba and lupwned the audience member that bitch-slapped her.
It was epic!
This always makes me laugh!

Me too. I've written her twice and both times she has been incredibly gracious and polite. I will admit the first time I met her she wasn't the nicest but I just tell myself it was because it was at a concert stage door and there were no barricades. Everyone was crowding her with Evita posters so yea. But the second time at Gypsy she talked to me about something but I dont remember because that woman's mouth moves like a motor. I just nodded and smiled.

I was there when she told some guy "It ain't pretty" and he burst into tears. They guy simply could not be consoled. I heard through the grapevine that he even tried killing himself with an overdose of Pepto Bismol. He didn't die, he just turned pink.
My mother bought me tickets for "Evita" on Broadway when I was 8 years old. I remember that I loved the show, even though I didn't understand everything that was going on. (I was 8!!) Anyway, Patti LuPone blew me away!!! Since I didn't know anything about "stagedooring," my mom said that we were going to wait outside the theater for a little while after the show. Lo and behold, Patti walked out of the theater to sign autographs and take pictures. She was so sweet to us- she signed my Playbill, posed for a pic, then talked to us for a little while. I told her that I wanted to audition for LaGuardia HS when I grew up, and she encouraged me to do so. I know this was many years ago, but it left a big impression on me as a child. I saw her in many production since then, and most recently, Gypsy. She has always been pleasant during all of my experiences with her. I've heard the good and bad stories, but I don't have any bad stories to tell....
Sorry...it wasn't called LaGuardia HS until both schools merged. It was Performing Arts back then....
Once a hundred years ago, my best buddy (who was OBSESSED with La LuPone) made me go to some AIDS benefit concert were she was performing.
At the the time my naturally thin friend (talk about Jack Sprat!) was getting over a serious bout of the flu that made him uncommonly thin and gaunt.
Well LuPone sang her song and we knew she would probably leave after her number so he dragged me to the stage door (something I hate doing) and we waited for her to exit.
We were the only ones there as the show was still going on. She came out and my friend stopped her and asked if she would sign his program.
She did without any hesitation, then she looked up at him and suddenly stopped cold.
Her entire manner changed as she took on this pained yet sympathetic expression.
She started talking to him in this odd "it will be all right" tone while gently touching his cheek.
I was completely bewildered.
She then lunged towards him and gave him a big hug. I swear when she turned away I saw a tear in her eye.
When limo pulled away, my friend turned to me and said, "I think she thinks I'm dying."
I buckled over laughing!
jeniferrene, that's honestly one of the sweetest stories I've heard about Patti. but tell me, did you actually recognize her at the stage door?
when i was 12 i became obsessed with the cast album from 'evita' (can you say, "young gay"?). growing up in NJ i had never seen a broadway show, but became obsessed with the OCR that i got from the local library. anyway, i begged my parents for tickets for my 13th birthday.
before i went i wrote to patti to make sure she'd be in the show when i saw it (three months later). i also mentioned that my parents found it odd i was playing evita in my room all the time (they later learned to expect such behavior).
anyway, La LuPone wrote me the sweetest note in reply. she asked me to make sure my tickets were for the Wed night performance, not the matinee, and that if they were for the matinee to send them to her so she could exchange them for the evening performance. she also encouraged my interest in theatre, saying "although she was sure my parents were wonderful, that she felt it was so much better to go through life with passions, interested in *something*, rather than wandering listlessly like many people do".
it was a wonderful note, that i've saved to this day, and wonderful advice that i totally agree with.
say what you will about her, but i will be forever grateful.
I sent Patti an email in March after Gypsy had such great opening reviews. (btw, I had never sent an email to any actor - and really didn't expect a response because I didn't ask a question, only told her congratulations on the great opening) I told her in the email that I was really looking forward to seeing her in May when my husband and I were coming to NYC for our anniversary. She sent a really sweet email back saying she hoped we would enjoy the show and that she would be performing on the night we were going be there unless she was sick.
After we saw the show (completely awesome) we went out to the stagedoor to wait. When she came out she asked everyone in the area were I was standing where they were from. Everyone around me started telling her "Philly", "Boston", "Jersey", etc. I told her "I've come farther than any of them. I'm from north Georgia." She stopped and looked at me and said - "You emailed me". I told her "yes". As she walked away she said "Oh yeah, happy anniversary, you two!"
I didn't mention the reason for our trip at the stage door, so I was really blown away that she remembered the email that well. Especially since I had only put where I was from under my signature on the email.
It was a great gift -- better than any autograph or photo.
I have admired Patti since I was a teenager, but had never had the opportunity to see her perform in person. It was a wonderful experience.
I would love to write to Patti, but I wouldn't know what to ask her, that hasn't been asked a million times already.
