that interviewer is like that during all his interviews. I dont like him that much.
TBH, I think Patti is very much allowed to discuss ALW. I do not like it when people put on a fake front on something that is VERY public and something pretty much anyone who knows about the two will know. And she did give props to Evita...she said it was his best score which is something I agree with. Esp. the bit about his editing skills...that man does not know when to step back and look at the overall picture.
I actually sort of gained some respect for Patti: The Lady after this interview. Her memoir sort of pissed me off, but I'll admit, here she was terrific. I'll always love Patti: The Performer though.
Love her. Love this interview. She's so relaxed and real. It's clear that she likes Paul Wontorek and vice versa. Good stuff!
The poster way above that said she isn't a good person. I mean, get real! She's a human being, and certainly, not perfect, but to say she is a bad person is kind of silly.
If someone made me a big Broadway star, gave me a salary we BWWers only could dream of, a Tony award, and then gives me a million dollars after a lawsuit. And, yes, that someone promised me something that never happened because maybe I wasn't the right person for the role in a certain show, I'd be frustrated and it's fine to say it out loud. But to then say bad things about that person and dismiss that person's talent is just low-class.
I'd always bring up that that person made me, maybe I'd say that I'm said I had to go through a lawsuit for a broken promise, but I don't like the way she talks about him.
Not like I have any symphathy for ALW, I couldn't care less, but I feel like she is stuck on a little detail and doesn't see the big picture. And that picture says she wouldn't be who she is now without Evita and the chance that HE gave her.

Andrew Lloyd Webber made her. Without him she may very well be nothing. We all know she feels burned over the Sunsetl Blvd. thing. And well she should. At the end of the day Lloyd Webber gave her the career she has. She holds a grudge longer than Arthur Laurents. It's time to quit bitching and move on.
ALW wanted to fire her from Evita out of town and replace her with Elaine Page.
Like most creative types, Patti LuPone is incredibly talented, totally watchable and very dynamic but she is also deeply insecure, easily wounded, and emotionally fragile. She also has a lot of anger. She admits to most of that in her book and other interviews.
I think the most telling thing I ever read about her is the OUT interview with her where she seemed lonely, dispondent and sad. The going out alone after EVITA story is very telling too. She has latched onto Benanti as a BFF for some reason, but she typically doesn't mingle with her contemporaries and is a terror if for some reason she doesn't like you.
I accept her for what she is, what most actors are-just regular people whose job is on the stage. They have all the idiosyncrasies and insecurities we have.
We all have that one kinda funny/kinda bitchy lady we work with at the office who we tolerate and sometimes enjoy but never invite out for coffee. That's Patti LuPone.

Yes, she does owe ALW a lot in terms of creating her career, but he's a snake and she has every reason to be very upset at him even still for what he did to her.
Is that really true about Evita? I'm very interested to hear details about this one...

I think it is impossible to judge it without fully knowing their relationship which we never will. She gave him credit for Evita as she should have but when she explained her reason for the "crap music" remark she actually gave a substantial reason rather then just attacking him. I know people who share similar views on Lloyd Webber.
This just made me love Patti even more!!
As important as Evita/Webber were in Patti's career, I think it's a bit of an overstatement to say that Webber solely launched her career. Don't forget that Patti had been touring with The Acting Company for several years prior and had even been nominated for a Tony for her performance in The Robber Bridegroom. Yes, Evita increased her profile considerably, but I think she would have ultimately had a career regardless.
If BWW had been around during EVITA, Patti would be decimated. The queens on this board would have strung her up they way they have Donna Murphy, Charlotte D'Amboise, Karen Olivo and others instead of kissing her ass.
I can read the threads already about, "Patti Out AGAIN", "Patti's Voice Is Shot", "LuPone CANT SING THE ROLE-just hang it up and let Terri sing it full time.", "I saw Patti at a bar ALONE-if she's not in the show why is walking the streets and IN A BAR. She should be saving her voice!"
I can only imagine. She got lucky.

I don't know if I completely agree with all of that, since it seems [to me] that she has a happy and satisfying marriage and always says that she has more friends outside of the business than in it. I think she's possibly more prone to melancholy (and had been drinking) than actually lonely, despondent and sad.
And I've always wondered why Terri Klausner didn't replace her full-time.
