Great vid! Another job well done by Rick.

Does the whole thing play when somebody calls you? If so, turn it off before you go see a show.

re: Patti LuPone: Born for the Stage

It is an interesting video. For my taste, she's become more mannered since the beginning of her career.

On the other hand, there was some much drama surrounding LuPone Gypsy: the author saying she will never play Rose, a death-bed plea, over the top at City Center, why is she wearing slippers, will she miss a performance, will she win a Tony, will it be taped for PBS, etc. plus her fans who believe she walks on water. It all made most 19th century melodramas look dull.

The show was a hit, three actors won Tonys, the show closed. Mourn for a day or two, then get on with it.

Namo--what a great idea! That when if my phone goes off during a Patti LuPone show, all she'll hear is her own voice!

my ringtone is part of Latin from Manhattan from Les Mouches, and I'd probably die of embarrassment if it went off and she heard it.

re: Patti LuPone: Born for the Stage

I hate to drag it, but:

"As for love threads that is ridiculous- there are 1000s of threads on here for shows that get invaded by others - take the Wicked and Rent threads- so much abuse on there. Just remember Im not doing it to any one personally so don't come back personally on me. "

I think the point about double standards between Patti LuPone and Wicked/RENT is a good one - even if you do come off quite bitter expressing your views of Patti LuPone :P.
Give me claws and a hunch, just away from this bunch.

I love the footage of young Patti. It's such a treat. Thanks for this again! And Rick McKay...when is the second Golden Age film coming out?

Which part?

(I had to ask.)

...

PJ, you're going to make her try to identify actual lyrics in "Latin from Manhattan"???

I can, actually! although, for the longest time I was convinced the line was "I'm a hooker from 5th avenue"...

anyway, the part of the song is "I'm a Latin from Manhattan [shocker], you can tell by my manana, I'm a Latin from Manhattan, and not Havana. Though I does the rumba for yas, and I call myself Delores, I was in a Broadway chorus, known as Senorita Patti Lu."

I'm kind of obsessed with the fact that she sings Senorita Patti Lu.

Well done, Givesmevoice! I couldn't work out nearly that much (though I do love her singing that--it always makes me smile).

re: Patti LuPone: Born for the Stage

well, Reggie, there are definitely some songs where it's all just noise and vowels, but I've gotten a lot better at identifying words and making sense out of them!

re: Patti LuPone: Born for the Stage

My favorite instance is on the "Hey, Mr. Producer" set, where she sings "As Long As He Needs Me."

It's possibly my favorite single recording of Patti's, but when she reaches the line "I don't let on," there is not a consonant in sight. But her sound is stunning there, so apart from a wry mental note of "You didn't even try!" I just go with it.

re: Patti LuPone: Born for the Stage

I actually am having a hard time thinking of a specific example because I've been listening to her for so long that I might actually speak LuPonese now. I did, for the longest time, have a lot of trouble with the lyrics in "Buenos Aires", but that's not completely her fault. who uses "eiderdown" in a song sung by an uneducated 15 year old girl?

oh, and some songs in "Anything Goes" are a little slippery. let's just say that Forbidden Broadway parody of her was spot on.

re: Patti LuPone: Born for the Stage

isn't she lucky her name rhymes with that then? re: Patti LuPone: Born for the Stage
