Only time I've ever wished I had HBO.
I see that LuPone critiques one of the students for riffing, which I know she's come out against. (I'm on her side, for the most part). What I find funny is, now having read her memoir, that she had no problem adding a riff to "I Dreamed a Dream" back in the 80's. She claims that she was the one who decided to go up the scale on shame to give the song a little something extra.

Thats not a riff though.

It was friggin' awesome! I just wish it had been a 60 minute show, instead of 30. from RC in Austin, Texas
It was AMAZING!!!!! Sooooo wish I was one of those students!!!
Does anyone know if it will be available to watch online for those of us without HBO.
I see an airing on hbofam this friday, but not tonight. Lame april fools joke.
It's on HBOGo if you have a friend who can hook you up there.
It was on HBO Family at 7:30 Eastern last night.
I thought she and the program were both excellent. And I found the riff moment fascinating: the girl did the riff really well--but when she dropped it at Patti's instruction, that same musical moment was a hundred times more powerful.

I was a little astounded that Patti didn't seem to know what the "highs" in "I Miss the Mountains" referred to. I am glad that she made the girl pick another song--I agreed that it was much too old for her.
Her suggestions were really great, especially with the second kid. I loved when she was like "Why are you saying it so negatively? You're in love with this girl!"
I was kvelling for the entire 30 minutes. Made me want to get back to NYC.

In that same critique, I loved when she said "You want to BE her bagel. AN EVERYTHING BAGEL!"
I actually liked everything she did with Maggie, including commenting that the mountains were orgasms (and Maggie's face when she said that). But I especially liked that she called her out on her joke about the single malt whiskey at Joe Allen, because she seemed like the kind of girl who needs a little boost in her confidence (and I think Patti recognized that).

Is there any place non HBO subscribers could see this?
If you know someone with HBO you can borrow their HBO GO account and watch it. It's allot of fun. La LuPone gives some fine advice!
The best part, by far, was Patti saying the "highs" and "mountains" in "I Miss the Mountains" are references to having an orgasm.
^ And the girl's face in response.
