What an appropriate thread!! I am just watching Funny Girl right now for the very first time. It's amazing. Why did I wait so long to see this film?

Because you hadn't yet begun to explore your inner gay man.

I've never seen FUNNY GIRL, nor have I had a desire to.

FUNNY GIRL is the greatest movie musical of all time. Better than Dreamgirls, Chicago, Moulin Rouge, Oliver, Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, and all other favorites. It's THE BEST.

And it's fascinating, because to me, the best parts of the movie are the non-musical numbers (even though the score is VERY good).

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

To be honest, I've actually never seen it either. Maybe I'll bump it to the top of my Netflix Queue.

I've never watched the film all the way through but I did see Funny Girl during its Boston tryout (where it was almost a disaster) and then 3 times on Broadway where it was much improved. Streisand was there all 4 times!!!!

If only I liked Barbra one tenth as much as she does.

I guess I'm still bitter from that week I spent watching Yentl. (Or so it seemed)

SM2: "I've never seen FUNNY GIRL, nor have I had a desire to."

Yet, ANOTHER reason no one likes you.

And, you really don't have to be a Barbra fan to enjot the film. It really is a FANTASTIC movie. If you are going by Babs performance in 'Hello, Dolly!', then yes, she DID screw up that film. But 'Funny Girl' is brilliant.

In "The Dangerous Christmas of Little Red Riding Hood," which had songs by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill, the Wolf (Cyril Richard) says to Little Red Riding Hood (Liza Minelli) "I was thinking of people who give gifts to other people" and then starts singing "THEY'RE THE LUCKIEST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD..."

YENTL is a beautiful story. Not every fully understands its meaning, as they have little knowledge of the damaging gender roles that still exist today in Orthodox Judaism.

I like the film of Funny Girl very much, but better than the films of The Sound of Music or Oliver? Not in a million years.
