re: Phantom Sequel to Tryout In Toronto

If this pans out, expect a lot to change regarding what has been announced as Mirvish's 09/10 season. My guess: Joseph pushes back to Spring 2010 and Priscilla to Fall 2010.

They mention Simon Lee as the musical director, did they not fire him from the Sound of Music for getting in trouble with his younger boyfriend or hooker.

re: Phantom Sequel to Tryout In Toronto

I thought I had read in the Toronto papers that Ramin Karimloo might be part of the Toronto production since he is from here (or Brampton, or something like that). Perhaps it was wishful thinking. The reports now are saying that he and Sierra Boggess (The Little Mermaid) will headline the London cast. If the Toronto production is destined for Broadway, then presumably they will be looking for stars with name value on Broadway.

Also intriguing is the Actors Equity casting notices for this show: https://www.broadwayworld.com/article/RIALTO_CHATTER_LOVE_NEVER_DIES_Casting_Breakdown_Revealed_20090320

It says the Phantom is 35-40 years old, yet doesn't this take place 10 years after Phantom of the Opera? How young was he supposed to be then? And how old was Michael Crawford? I always pictured the Phantom as a sort-of father figure, yet they are actually contemporaries. In "Love Never Dies," the Phantom is 35-40, Christine is mid-late 20s, Raoul is 35-40. This changes the dynamic in my mind--if the Phantom and Raoul are the same age. I guess I imagined the Phantom saw Raul as a younger rival to himself (for Christine's affections).

Dirty Dancing has only 9 performances left! What's coming next?

re: Phantom Sequel to Tryout In Toronto

Well, if the Phantom sequel does come to Toronto they should really push Joseph back or cancel Joseph. This is because Joseph was here not too long ago and I don't think Toronto needs Joseph. Anyways, if Joseph comes it will be a year at the most. Also, maybe they'll put a show like The Harder They Come in the Canon. Then after it leaves in September, they have enough time to install for Priscilla.

re: Phantom Sequel to Tryout In Toronto

Priscilla (in its current state - the Australian set) can only fit into the PoW. That is the problem (and why it has been delayed until next Spring when Mirvish thinks SoM will be closed).

If Phantom 2 happens at the Royal Alex, Joseph has to be cancelled as there won't be a theatre for it. Unless they somehow use the Elgin or The Sony Centre. I'm thinking it will not happen as commercial theatre in the city isn't doing very well at this time.

I am surprised that Phantom 2 will be using the Royal Alex though, as it is quite small and generally can't house a large technical show, which people are assuming it will be.

re: Phantom Sequel to Tryout In Toronto

What I think they'll do is if SOM is still successful by the time they should start istalling for Pricilla then they will push Pricilla back and give subscribers tickets for later in the year.
Heres how it could work for the upcoming season, not including 08/09:
POW: SOM currently, Pricilla
Canon: The Harder they Come,August, Fiddler, Little House, Young Frankinstein
Panasonic- Stuff Happens, Cloud 9
Royal Alex- Dirty Dancing(ending), Joseph

Phantom 2 could fit in either before Pricilla if SOM wants to end at POW
or
at the Royal Alex before Joseph. Joseph is the 1990 production the brochure said so that means it won;t be super technical.

re: Phantom Sequel to Tryout In Toronto

You don't suppose someone might take pity on Toronto and spare it yet another "Joseph" run? Fun to perform in, no doubt, and a sure family-and-friends ticket draw thanks to the children's chorus, but it's a vehicle that, quite honestly, should be relegated to the school pageant level instead of hoovering up production dollars and blocking off prime performance space.

Next to none of the musical genres at which it attempts to poke fun is familiar enough to today's family audience demographic for it to get, let alone enjoy, the tepid satire. And let's face it: that aspect was already pretty iffy when the show was in its first Toronto stint, which was really just a long-running excuse for the mothers of that generation to see a shirtless Donny Osmond in person. If that parade had all but passed way back then, imagine how far off it must be by now.

Other revivals can work when they have a solid book with enough equally solid musical/lyrical material - or when today's stagecraft can sufficiently distract the audience from forgiveable lapses in those departments. In Joseph's case, there isn't wizardry enough in the world to compensate for what is otherwise hollow or missing. And, even if there were, the most it all might come to in the end is a draw; so why bother?

Couldn't all that time, talent, money and effort be put to far more rewarding use? Suggestions, anyone?

re: Phantom Sequel to Tryout In Toronto

I think Joseph was just a convenient place holder until Phantom was confirmed. I am fairly confident that Phantom will take Joseph's place in the season.

Priscilla is definitely going to have to be a POW show.

You shouldn't be surprised that the Royal Alex is getting Phantom 2. First of all, the Canon housed the full scale original for a decade. The RAT has a deeper stage (although admittedly not as much wing space), and state of the art automated fly systems and power distribution systems where permanently installed to accommodate Dirty Dancing. The venue can now handle the most technical of shows as long as the set pieces will fit in the space, which I'm sure they can. It's almost assured that for a show like Phantom, there will be even more modifications, but the framework is already in place. You should see the trap room at the Royal Alex. All the sound racks and a full orchestra room are housed under there, along with the revolve and lift machinery and automation controls. All built in for Dirty Dancing and all going to be taken out over the next month.

Of course Phantom 2 will have to have a similar gimmick to the falling Chandelier, hopefully it won't be as lame though.

re: Phantom Sequel to Tryout In Toronto

The Neil Simon Theatre in New York is also a small theatre like the Royal Alex. It wouldn't be absurd to see the show try out at a theatre comparable to the one they'll be in in New York, in terms of size of stage and auditorium.

In any case, they'll benefit from an intimate auditorium in a tryout city.

re: Phantom Sequel to Tryout In Toronto

You can hardly call Toronto's Phantom 2 run a tryout. Especially not when it is opening after London's production. PS: Looks like it is indeed opening in November, likely a token week or so after the London opening. Seems like a dangerous concept, since it doesn't allow any time for changes or restructuring like a real tryout would. Mighty egotistical to think that they are going to get it right three times in a row! Although the New York production will probably have plenty of time to implement any changes.

re: Phantom Sequel to Tryout In Toronto

Hate to burst bubbles, folks, but JOSEPH has *always* been a strong seller in Toronto. Toronto loves JOSEPH. It sold well when David Burnham took over, and then it sold well when the Troika tour of a different production came through a few years back with Deborah GIbson (shudder).

There's more than the market for it in Toronto.

Mirvish wants to bring it in because EVERY TIME it plays in Toronto it does well. It's something virtually guaranteed to make money. And that goes without saying that it's got a solid audience base because it's family friendly.

JOSEPH might get postponed, or a new venue, but I doubt Mirvish will scrap it.

re: Phantom Sequel to Tryout In Toronto

I agree that they won't just cancel Joseph because of a small month tryout of Phantom 2. They will reschedule it. Although, did they say that Phantom 2 will be a subscription show? Because that might mean Joseph will still be in this season and because Phantom 2 will not be on broadway yet there will lots of areas where there should be fixing.

re: Phantom Sequel to Tryout In Toronto

When the show moves to New York, do you think that the producers will close Phantom 1, and put the sequel in the Majestic? I think 22 years was a good run, or do you think they will want to be greedy, and open Phantom 2 in another theatre in case it bombs they have the original?

re: Phantom Sequel to Tryout In Toronto

Hey...

Ya I totally didn't understand the first time round that Phantom 2 in Toronto was a tryout for New York. Of course now I know that they will simply move the production to NY in the Spring. So my guess is Phantom 2 will be another "Bonus add on show" OR they will bump Joseph to the next season and just play it early. Mirvish can pretty much do anything because Dancap isn't looking like a strong alternative for disgruntled subscribers.

And yes, I'm sure they will keep Phantom 1 running. Can you imagine the package deals??? Phantom 1 and Phantom 2 all in the same day, with dinner in between... ha!

Dirty Dancing is still loading out of the RAT, and then I hear there will be a little bit of renovation front of house. I still wonder why the theatre is being kept dark for so long... I understand that the Canon has more seats BUT for many shows they close off the top section anyhow, so the difference is somewhat negligible. If anyone hasn't noticed, for some shows that aren't selling well or that require a more intimate space, they block off the back half of the balcony. Sometimes with black curtain, but sometimes they put up an elaborate temporary facade that looks (upon cursory examination) just like the rest of the theatre. I can't see August selling out 2000 seats for a six week run, regardless of it's press.

re: Phantom Sequel to Tryout In Toronto

The most recent article I could find:

April 14, 2009
Headlines: Phantom Sequel to Play West End's Adelphi Theatre Before Bowing on Broadway

"Love Never Dies, Andrew Lloyd Webber?s sequel to The Phantom of the Opera, will play the West End?s Adelphi Theatre before bowing on Broadway (probably at the Neil Simon Theatre), according to London?s The Daily Mail. As previously announced, the musical, directed by Jack O?Brien, will likely star Ramin Karimloo and Sierra Boggess.

Shortly following the London premiere, productions of Love Never Dies will open at Toronto?s Royal Alexandra Theatre and in Shanghai, China. The Broadway production, which was originally announced for the fall of 2009, will then premiere in April 2010, likely featuring the cast from the Toronto production. It is still unclear which productions will feature Boggess and Karimloo. . ."

Ramin will be 31 in September of 2009 ( for the person who found the ages odd).

I just read on BroadwayWorld that, if successful, the Toronto production will stay here and not move to Broadway (New York will get its own production).
