Did anyone else see todays show? The chandelier didn't fall! What's going on?????
Oh No! Must have been technical difficulties. It is rare, but sometimes it does not fall.

Probably a major technical difficulty...It happens every so often...it could've been worse...it may not have risen at the beginning, which I think would be far worse becuase that is the chandelier's far more superior route during the show.
It happens every once in a while. The chandeleir falling isn't really that great. It goes so slowly. The time is better spent walking down to the bathroom so you don't need to stand on that line that goes on for a decade.

I agree...although out of the four venues I've seen it play, the best chandelier fall I've ever seen goes to the 3NT at the Opera House in Boston...THAT was fast and intense...for once! :)

I saw it in Boston.. and you thought it went fast? I thought it went really slow and that was the first time I ever saw it live!

If Boston was fast, I'd hate to see it the normal speed. I actually laughed.
Uh no! Bummer
Technical bug no doubt.

Compared to what I'd seen the past...(and I've seen SLOW, believe me, if you think that was slow, try watching it fall like mollasses, which I've seen)...it was fast.
So what did they do instead?
It scared the bejesus out of me at Her Majesty's Theatre in London, which is, BTW the best place to see the show. The theatre seats about 1200 but seems much more intimate. Phantom plays like a chamber-piece in such a setting.
I saw this show when I was about 8 years old (7 or 8...) and I remember vividly screaming out loud when it fell!
I was dissapointed in it falling. I would love to know what the actors did the pick the show out of the technical distraction.
i'll find out if u want, i know the bway don attilio who is one of those ppl!
Also, one time the chandelier didn't light up when it fell, which is quite dangerous for the actors standing RIGHT IN ITS PATH!!

it sucks when that happens.. but it does.. so.. you just have to work with it. That's the beauty of Live Theatre - always something different for each show and you just have to go with it!

The London chandelier I thought fell pretty fast. The traveling productions I've always thought a bit on the slow side. Haven't yet seen it in NY, though I'm working on that.
Besides the London chandelier falling quickly (which it does) there is just something AMAZING about seeing the show in its home nest. The Her Majesty's Theatre (it will be renamed His Majesty's, the original name, when Queen Elizabeth dies and William succeds her on the throne) is one of the greatest theatres in the world. Don't take my word for it, do a Google image search for the theatre and just look at the place lit up at night. It is SO exciting to go to that theatre, which is large and yet intimate. A funny story, the theatre was built by the actor/manager Herbert Beerbohm Tree (he produced and starred in the original "Pygmalion" as Henery Higgins) and apparently, he was standing out in front of the theatre the first day it opened, supervising the installation of the worlds' first electrically lit marquee (which probably said "HERBERT BEERBOHLM TREE presents Pygmalion") when his biggest rival actor/manager rounded the corner and said "Herbert! Haven't seen you in ages. Have you managed to find any work these days?" Ouch.

When William succeeds her on the throne? Not sure Prince Charles would be too pleased about that!!!- he has said that he will acceed to the throne, not abdicate and pass it to William as some have said.
or she could "simply deny him the crown and live forever"
lol, what movie?
Just thought i'd add my 2 cents. The Broarway chandelier is the slowest i've seen, London's one is usually a bit quicker because it has a shorted distance to go. Toronto's chandelier was a bit more exciting, not much faster, but it was alot more jerky and gave it a bit more of a crazed feeling, unlike broadway's chandelier that gently glides down from the heavens, lol.
But here you can see the difference in the 2 theatres, the Majestic and Her Majesty's
Her Majesty's
Majestic
Oh dear god, lifeisacabaret, you are SO right. As a boy from the colonies, I am ashamed to admit my mind had completely passed Charles over (as I wish succession would). I love Elizabeth and am worried I'll be in the ground before one of Dianna's offspring gets on the throne.
Sorry, Liz.

Now THIS is a theater. Can you imagine going to a show in a theater that looks like this? What a thrill!
In the 72 times I have seen it, the chandelier always fell, but what does happen if it does not? Does anybody know if the Phantom yells GO? Is the music the same? Does Raoul pull Christine out of the way during the ILL MUTO curtain call?
