if this were a just world, les miz would hold that title and phantom would have closed ages ago.
but hell, in that case (as in, if this were a just world) cats would have never opened, so oh well.
I did not see anything that made Phantom deserve to run even as long as it has already, but obviously the Tonys (of which it won 7 incl. Best Musical), critics who LOVED it, and audiences who continue to keep ticket sales from plummeting, do. It was enjoyable but it doesn't deserve to be the longest running Broadway show ever, even though it will do so.
Actually, critics didn't love Phantom. Well, at the time of its opening, they liked it, but since then the show has gotten lukewarm-to-negative reviews.
I would have also loved (and hoped) to see Les Miz on the top of the list. Of the four big British mega-musicals, Les Miz was the most critically-acclaimed. Even after 16 years, the show still garnered rave reviews which commented on how fresh and emotional the performances still were.

I'm still mad Les Mis closed before beating Cats. Les Mis was hands down the best out of the three longest running shows. I did like Phantom a little more than Cats(although I didnt like either of them) so I hope it runs longer than Cats. I think that Lion Kind will set the record for Longest running show one day. It is still playing to full houses after 7 years.
WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND was NOT a bomb. A 2.5 year run is short for Lloyd Webber but it is not a bomb. People are under the delusion that WHISTLE was a bomb only because it did not go to Broadway. His only bomb really was the original JEEVES with THE BEAUTIFUL GAME coming in 2nd only making it a year. I saw BY JEEVES on Broadway in 2001 and it was wonderful. BY JEEVES was a limited run by the way and was not meant to have a long run. Updated On: 7/6/04 at 12:32 AM
I saw Whistle Down the Wind
I remember it vividly
not because of the show
although the snakes scared the byjeevies out of me
but what happened during the show the night I saw it is a story unto itself...
Let me guess. You were there on a night they couldn't get the highway platform to elevate properly? It's a very high tech show. What happened?
i havent seen both but cats was only good in 2 parts( The beginning of Gus and Mr. mistopholes. They should've made cats one act so people don't walk out of it.
they should have made a cast recording of the filmed version. That has the best cast and arrangements out of all of the recordings available. I fall asleep watching the video everytime, but I like 80% of the music
J. you're smarter than I've taken you for!
Suffice it to say we had an extra 15 minute intermission
Those crazy Brits
haha. Yeah, I hear in the first month of the show they had a lot of problems getting the highway stage to rise. WHISTLE looked like it was almost as expensive as SUNSET BLVD. to run. I was fortunate to see it when it was working. Remember, WHISTLE is in my top 5 favorite shows ever. I know EVERYTHING about it and though that London production was extremely underrated.
I'm smarter than everyone on this board takes me for. Not at their fault though. lol
