Phantom of the Opera vs. Cats
Phantom of the Opera vs. Cats#0

it better!
re: Phantom of the Opera vs. Cats#2
Posted: 7/5/04 at 3:02pmYes, especially with the film coming out

Posted: 7/5/04 at 3:04pmI agree with you, schlamdiddly!!!
re: Phantom of the Opera vs. Cats#4
Posted: 7/5/04 at 3:06pmYes it will. You can write it down. Money can be bet on it. The film WILL boost ticket sales to the Broadway show even though it doesn't need it.

It's all but a foregone conclusion.
THE LION KING will probably be next on the list.
re: Phantom of the Opera vs. Cats#6
Posted: 7/5/04 at 3:10pmUnfortunately, you're probably right.
re: Phantom of the Opera vs. Cats#7
Posted: 7/5/04 at 3:15pmRemember, PHANTOM is one of but not my favorite show. I would not have guessed IT would become the longest running but facing facts, it WILL.
re: Phantom of the Opera vs. Cats#8
Posted: 7/5/04 at 3:16pmSorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, Matt. THE LION KING has enough international tourist appeal to keep it running for about a decade.
re: Phantom of the Opera vs. Cats#9
Posted: 7/5/04 at 3:17pmHopefully LION KING will pull a LES MIS and shave about a half hour off of it. That show is in need of some major trimming.
re: Phantom of the Opera vs. Cats#10
Posted: 7/5/04 at 3:26pmThank you MATT. Agreed. THE LION KING is a little long for a children's show. 60 minutes would make it a theme park attraction and 2.75 hours makes it LES MIZ so I would say 2 hours even would be good.

Posted: 7/5/04 at 4:18pmI think Phantom is better so I hope it outlasts Cats - however will the film really boost ticket sales? What if the film is awful and everyone hates it? I can't see that helping things out. I guess we all better hope its a good movie.
re: Phantom of the Opera vs. Cats#12
Posted: 7/5/04 at 4:23pmEven if the movie is bad, I think it will STILL help sales because it will raise awareness about the show in a general way. I think I'd bet money on it.
re: Phantom of the Opera vs. Cats#13
Posted: 7/5/04 at 4:40pmI think Phantom is a better show than Cats, so it should outrun it, IMHO. However, the better musicals aren't always the long running ones. As for the film helping the musical, I guess it probably will, like J. said -- raises awareness.

re: Phantom of the Opera vs. Cats#15

I definately think POTO will be passing Cats. With the movie it'll pull a possible Chicago and get attendance up.
Then with the rumours of ALW planning a Las Vegas POTO knockoff, it gives me the intention that he is not planning on closing the shows for a while. Especially cause every other project he's done has gone and exploded. Anyone remember By Jeeves?
re: Phantom of the Opera vs. Cats#21
Posted: 7/5/04 at 7:09pmPhantom of the Opera is definetly going to surpass CATS, or it better since Phantom is 100 times better than CATS ever could be. Also, I like some of the music in By Jeeves, but I have never seen the show. Also, A lot of Webber's musicals have bombed "Aspects of Love," "Whistle Down the Wind," "Beautiful Game".............but the music to these musicals are spectacular. I can't wait till "Woman in White."

Posted: 7/5/04 at 7:29pmI definitely think POTO will surpass CATS. POTO is an incredible show that keeps you interested the ENTIRE time. Though I loved CATS, parts of it (the whole Gus the Theatre Cat/Grizabella/a lot of the rest of it) was really boring. I saw CATS and POTO in the same year...I fell asleep in CATS (but that's not saying much because I was only 7...) I'm glad that the ALW shows went so far! The guy writes incredible music!
re: Phantom of the Opera vs. Cats#24
Posted: 7/5/04 at 9:16pmI think it's a given that Phantom will surpass Cats; there's only a few years to go, and Phantom shows no signs of slowing down. I'm not a big fan of either show, but at least Phantom has a storyline; I've always felt embarrassed that Cats is the longest-running show in Broadway history.
