I couldn't believe my eyes this morning when I saw that English tenor Philip Langridge died suddenly at the age of 70. I saw him in his final performance this past January at The Met. He played the witch in Hansel and Gretel and was absolutely amazing. Here's his New York Times obituary: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/08/arts/music/08langridge.html

I meant to add in my original post here (I'm MimiJudith but for some reason when I tried to edit my post was unable to sign back in under that name) that Philip Langridge was so remarkable that I bought the recent DVD version of this opera because he was in that as well. He was a marvelous opera singer with fantastic comedic timing. I am shocked that he died. He looked wonderful when I saw him in his final performance ever on January 2, 2010. I was in the first row, so I was able to see him very well and I've thought of his performance every single day since.

That's so sad. I'm so glad I had the chance to see him. His performance was remarkable. Rest in peace.

I only saw him in the broadcast of HANSEL AND GRETEL but he exuded such power and delight in that role. My sympathies to his family, and colleagues. May he rest in peace.

He was a really impressive Oedipus in Julie Taymor's production of Stravinsky's opera. There's a very good DVD available, well worth checking out.

He must have been one scary witch.

I'll definitely check that one out!

Yes, he was scary as The Witch but he was also hysterically funny at the same time. I highly recommend that you take a look at The Met's Hansel and Gretel on DVD from 2008. He was a wonderful performer who was able to convincingly sing a wide variety of roles. His Witch is pretty close to definitive. And when he performed Peter Grimes, it was like you were seeing that particular opera for the very time. He will be sorely missed. We are so very lucky that he performed right up until the end.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body
