re: Photo Coverage: John Lloyd Young's Birthday Party

Am I the only one who does not like him?

I think he is a one hit wonder. I think he over acts in Jersey Boys, and his tony win over Micheal Cerveris is a travisty.

I think its wrong that hes getting so much attention. I think he's fake. His tony speach was terrible. He's an attention whore...and even needs press at his birthday party. Get rid of this guy..please.

First off, John Lloyd Young was not up against anyone named Micheal Cerveris this year at the Tonys. Second, what's a travisty?

re: Photo Coverage: John Lloyd Young's Birthday Party

I was holding off posting in this thread because, sincerely - everyone IS entitled to their opinion regardless of how vitriolic it is.

First: Many (MANY) performers and industry people have invited various members of the press to events such as baby showers, birthdays, and so on. It's certainly not the first photo coverage on this or any other site of this nature, so to single John Lloyd out either indicates you're not aware of this, you have some personal agenda, or I guess you just didn't care for this particular photo coverage.

Second: You can not like any given performer - but to make comments like you think they are a one hit wonder or that they are lucky if they ever work on Broadway again is just (to me) obnoxious.

And on a personal note - John Lloyd is anything but fake. And anyone that's spent as little as a minute talking to him would know how overwhelmed, gracious, humble and other such adjectives he is about where he is and what he's doing.

But it's ok (and this is why I wasn't going to post) - It seems each season there are one or two people (at least) who becomes the message board whipping boy or girl - performers or people in the industry that regardless of what they do gets criticized. I mean really - people are that ticked off that John Lloyd Young has been making personal appearances? He's the only one in the industry that's doing that?! It's wrong that a performer who basically had the "american dream" happen to him (after a lot of work) is garnering attention? WOW.. that's just cRaZy!

And "get rid of him".. What does that even mean?

Ok.. I'm getting off my soapbox. Like I said - everyone is entitled to their opinion, but if these are the things that "anger" you or take up time in your day, I just don't know what to say...

Craig, not to dispute anything you say but... the b'day party photo op does seem a bit excessive even by today's standards. And don't you think Young's relentless publicity campaigning runs the risk of making him OVERexposed?

re: Photo Coverage: John Lloyd Young's Birthday Party

Define (relentless) publicity campaigning then? Because John (and many times with other cast members) have done several appearances or been at other theater events? That's pretty normal for leads in a hit show.

re: Photo Coverage: John Lloyd Young's Birthday Party

"Relentless publicity campaigning" in this case means he's everywhere all the time. For me, too much so. I have nothing against him - I was rooting for him to win the Tony. But enough already... just my take.

re: Photo Coverage: John Lloyd Young's Birthday Party

Again - I don't understand the being everywhere? You mean all the pre-tony events and jersey boys personal appearances? Where else is he that other people aren't just as present?

I found the Nightline (or whatever national evening news program) feature where he was "Person of the Week" was ridiculous. Person of the week? C'mon. More like Person of the Really Slow News Week.

Craig, maybe you're right - maybe it just seems like he's more visible than anyone else. But I think if I was managing his career right now I'd tell him to back off a bit and let his talent speak for itself.

re: Photo Coverage: John Lloyd Young's Birthday Party

It's disturbing how delusional most on this board are. HOW IS JLY OVEREXPOSED??? This is Broadway people and his Birthday party was chronicled on BWW, not splashed across the pages of INStyle!

I don't know how many thousands of times I need to say this and on how many threads about how many Broadway "stars" but NO ONE CARES. Let me restate, no one in hollywood is sitting around thinking that JLY is getting too much press and smiling too much, because for the most part, THEY DON'T EVEN KNOW WHO HE IS, so before you go around begrudging the guy a few photo op's, a reality check is definitely in order.

I'm sure most of you are still wondering HOW Rent the movie could bomb the way it did. And for those it gets past eveytime, YES, that last sentence was drenched in sarcasm!

I think he likes BWW which is why we see him around these parts a lot. All the cool peeps post here. I'm just sayin'...

re: Photo Coverage: John Lloyd Young's Birthday Party

JLY is so cute and talented, he should be a hood ornament.

I will follow Him,
Follow Him wherever He may go,
And near Him, I always will be
For nothing can keep me away,
He is my destiny.

I will follow Him,
Ever since He touched my heart I knew,
There isn't an ocean too deep,
A mountain so high it can keep,
Keep me away, away from His love.

I love Him, I love Him, I love Him,
And where He goes,
I'll follow, I'll follow, I'll follow.

I will follow Him,
Follow Him wherever He may go,
There isn't an ocean too deep,
A mountain so high it can keep,
Keep me away, away from His love...

I love Him
(Oh yes I love Him)
I'll follow
(I'm gonna follow)
True love
(He'll always be my true, true love)
Forever
(Now until forever)
I love Him, I love Him, I love Him,
And where He goes,
I'll follow, I'll follow, I'll follow,
He'll always be my true love,
My true love, my true love,
From now until forever,
Forever, forever...

There isn't an ocean too deep,
A mountain so high it can keep,
Keep me away, away from His love

re: Photo Coverage: John Lloyd Young's Birthday Party

Not wishing to argue this any further but... No one has suggested that JLY is a household name or that anyone outside the tiny world of Broadway and environs gives a damn about him. The fact is that WITHIN this tiny world he is ubiquitous these post-Tony days to no obvious point, and inviting press coverage of his b'day party struck some of us as a bit too much of a good thing. No larger issue has been raised.

What you are neglecting to note here is the name of the photographer. It's Linda Lenzi, dammit. Everyone knows that she's the queen of parties. You can die once you've been photographed by her.

Now I'm late for an appointment and I'm blaming all of you people! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

re: Photo Coverage: John Lloyd Young's Birthday Party

Ok... I am entering this little convo late but I did read each and every post.

I am a big fan of John, and have been since the show opened, more than many people can say, and I can kind of agree that he is everywhere, but I would never EVER call him fake. The guy ran himself into the ground before the Tony's by doing every single thing humanly possible and it wasn't because he is some smug attention-craving jerk but because he is a genuinely nice guy who is dedicated to his show and fans. I think that Broadway.com Behind the Scenes movie did a good job showing how tired he was before the vacation he took.

The whole publicizing the birthday party does seem maybe a tad extreme, but the guy did win the Tony and his birthday fell conveniently in the time leading down from the Tony's. I do have to agree with Al_Dente though in that he is hardly Britney Spears. I passed him on 8th Ave the other day, we said hi and if I recall correctly, there were no paparazzi following him then and I might have been the only person who knew who he was.

In conclusion, people may have a point in saying the are sick of seeing him at everything, but don't start talking badly about the guy because he is trying to further his career. He is a great guy and a wonderful actor and just doing what he thinks, and his publicists think, is best for him and his career.
