This production looks great... Honestly, the major thing bringing me there to see it is Patti... I just hope it's still on Broadway by next summer... I can't return until then.

Very cool pic, but i notice that Mike C. is wearing a standard, current men's tie. Is this new production of Sweeny set in today's era and no longer a period piece?

Posted: 10/8/05 at 3:01pmSo let me get this straight. Each of the cast members plays an instrument. That's it for the orchestra? There are no off-stage musicians? Doesn't that affect the grandeur of Sondheim's masterpiece?

It's a very different interpretation of the piece. Rather like the RNT and Chris Bond's version it concentrates on the characters and their motivations, making it a chamber piece as Sondheim originally intended. The actors use the instruments and music to explore their subtext in a quite startling way.
