This is some of the worst design work I've seen on a professional stage. What is with the LSD masterbation, ala 60's Psych Funk? I'd love to know what Describing Action (or Verb) the designer was using when sketching & costuming.
An absolute mess. An embarrasing catastrophe. And a pathetic attempt at mind-numbing vibrancy. Lots of "flash" won't make up for lack of substance and coherency. Are they aware??
This looks like another case of old people trying to cater to a younger audience. We do not need a "boy band" to make a show relevant to a younger audience. That looks awful. The whole show looks like it's trying way too hard to be hip. I think the costumes got it right, but the rest of it looks awful. And sounds tacky.
For those so worried about it, the Mad Hatter does wear a hat. I don't know how to respond to some of the other comments here (besides note to self: try and work LSD masterbation into a sentence at some point today), but unless something changed from the show I saw Sat and Sun, the Hatter does wear a hat.
"I don't know how to respond to some of the other comments here (besides note to self: try and work LSD masterbation into a sentence at some point today)"
Thanks for the honorable mention.
Here's my question - must you find a reason to respond to the "other" comments? Everything is open to criticism. Especially when the names attached include Wildhorn; regardless of his involvement with those atrocious costumes.
A defensive attitude is never an attractive one. I'd be happy to have a meaningful dialogue but, right now, all you have for me is that Nikki Snelson does...indeed...wear a hat.
*shrug* not defensive at all, I have no money invested here. Just don't know how to reply to or have a dialogue about costumes in response to "ew," "disgusting," and the like, comments that don't mention any specific 'faults.' The missing hat was something I could mention. Oh, also, seeing as how she doesn't change costume at all from the real world to Wonderland to looking glass world I am pretty sure that the Alice costume is purposely supposed to be that 'boring.'
This does look.... .... .... well, my thoughts on this show went all-time-high to..low. Snelson's costume would look incredible if it ust had a hat. I don't like the glasses on the Queen.
The "boy band" concept is part of the show - the picture is .. ... but still the concept of the writers.
I think while we're all entitled to our own opinions & critiques, it's hard to know what context all of these costumes, sets, etc. take on in the show unless we've seen it. I'm more interested in how it all comes together as an entire piece.
That being said, I am curious what kind of audience or demographic they might be catering too. I've heard that it's a little darker than the usual Alice in Wonderland which I like the idea of. I just wonder if that might hurt them when trying to pull in families with children. But I do believe there's a way to make good theatre thats appealing to both adults & children. We shall see.
