Never let it be said that Pia Zadora can't sing. She is singing her heart out at the Terrace Theatre these days, trying to be taller, uglier and brassier than she really is as Fanny Brice in the Long Beach Civic Light Opera revival of "Funny Girl." But the big question on everybody's mind before she opened as funny Fanny was: Can she act ? Yes she can, even if the performance that results is more gamin than brassy, more cute than ugly and definitely short, short, short.

I, too, saw this production and felt bad for the guy who took me. He was trying to make a good impression on me.

The show was terrible. I left with my jaw on the floor.

Well, she can't really act, but I'll take her over people like Kristen Stewart any day of the week. At least Pia was always entertaining. Had it not been for The Lonely Lady and all the crazy awards hoopla that came along with it, I think she might have kept on working as a pretty, but slightly dull actress for a few more years. She's honestly no worse than some of the goobers that are working these days.

Also, she can actually sing rather well. Wouldn't want her to carry a musical any time soon since she can't act, but she's not that bad.

LOL! These days, I might have to agree with him. I mean does anyone really need anything other than a nice voice to pull of something like Mamma Mia? It seems like, back in the day, we got people with real star power on stage who could actually act. The writing was better, too.

I don't want to see a production of Gypsy or Next to Normal with someone who's a brilliant singer, but a lousy actor. Trust me, I've seen some and as good as the material is, it's not gonna save the show from a terrible leading lady.

Thanks for posting the program from "Funny Girl." That's a blast from the past. I was in "Me & My Girl" at the time at Musical Theatre West - back when they were in La Mirada, and going by their original name of Whittier/La Mirada Light Opera, and we had a comp exchange to see the show. After seeing the show, everyone just called it GIRL, cause she wasn't FUNNY.

People have never forgiven poor Pia for her supposed transgressions: marrying a much older billionaire, "winning" a Golden Globe, and tearing down Pickfair. She does have a singing talent, though, and a certain plucky charm.
