Here's the full, uncut version of "Piddle, Twiddle, & Resolve" from the movie 1776. This version isn't commercially available on VHS or DVD.

Just thought I'd share.

It adds the 2nd verse back in.

This is the laser disc version that was released in the '90s.

I'm glad that they added "Cool, Cool, Considerate Men" back in on the DVD. Why didn't they add this?

The DVD release, sadly isn't everything that was on the "complete" laser disc release. It's actually a new "Director's Cut" with most, but not all of it.

I guess he really didn't want that 2nd verse in there!

I have a copy of the laser disc version, and they had to use work prints, and even B&W at one point, to restore it to the "complete" length, with no material removed. This was not the way it was released in the theatres EVER, though. They basically added in everything that had been cut out during test screenings and final edit sessions.

Cool, Considerate Men was intended for the theatrical release, but was cut at the last minute due to urging from Jack Warner and (believe it or not) the Nixon administration. Too controversial with the vietnam war raging on.

I miss the "full bosomed" reprise of "The Lees of Old Virginia," which was also on the laser disc, but cut from the DVD version.

I like the laser disc version the best, even with the uneven quality of the resurrected footage. For fans of the stage show, it's pretty much every line of dialogue, every note of music, and then some!

It also plays the best, IMO, even if it is a tad long.

The Director's Cut is long too, but not quite as effective... so I think I like it the LEAST, actually.

Either the full version (long but pure) or the theatrical release (cut down, but short and well paced).

Somewhere in the middle isn't really pleasing anybody.

...except Peter Hunt, I guess.

Any idea which version is played on TCM? It clocks in at close to two and a half hours.

I guess it all depends upon whether you prefer a cut or uncut "Piddle".

TCM plays the "Director's Cut" version. It has "Cool, Considerate Men", but it does not have the full "Piddle, Twiddle...".

But who needs a full Piddle when you can have Cool, Considerate Men?
