Generally, my views on jukebox musicals are less favourable compared with my views on musicals with original scores. But I will - and have in the past - defend the jukebox status of
Priscilla if needs be. First up, it's about drag queens. And what do drag queens *do* if not put their own fabulous performance onto existing songs? Of all the shows with unoriginal scores,
Priscilla is the one where this is actually the most appropriate road to take. And second, it's not like they've gone "okay, ABBA! We'll use ABBA songs, and see if we can work up some kind of story around 'em". The story, a strong one, came first. And the songs were not clumsily assembled from the back catalogue of a single musical act; by not confining themselves in that fashion, they were able to spread the net and get the most appropriate songs they could, unlike jukebox musicals which stick rigidly to one musical act whether the songs are appropriate for the scene or not.
So why does it have to be score snobbery? Why can't it just be that
Priscilla was a great fun night out, but
La Cage moved me emotionally to the very core?
(Spectre of theatre? Do you perhaps mean spectacle? It's not like we're talking about
The Woman in Black here.
