He is.

He'd also be a good choice to play Pippin.

Beyonce as Leading Player
Zac Effron as Pippin
Hugh Jackman as Charlemagne-that's pretty good casting
Catherine Zeta-Jones as Fastrada
Darren Criss as Lewis
Andrea Martin as Berthe (please, let's keep her in this! She's perfection in the role.)
Jennifer Lawrence as Catherine could work (although perhaps this role should be cast slightly older? Someone in their 30s? I thought the character was supposed to be older)

"Daniel Huttlestone as Lewis"
Do you mean Theo? If so, THAT WOULD BE PERFECT!

Hey, I wouldn't mind seeing Tracy Thoms as the LP. She was the LP in some early workshops. But then again, I think that Patina Miller or Matthew James Thomas could reprise their role on screen as well - if not both.

Didn't the SCRUBS guy try to make a movie of this?
Not saying it's impossible but I agree PIPPIN is a Stage vehicle and the script is the key.

THE LEADING PLAYER should be a man. It adds nothing to the piece making him a woman, Frstrada is the sex symbol, it does not need another one.
How 'bout Beouncie as Frastrada?
Personally I think she should never speak in a movie ever.
I'd like to see Nick Jonas as PIP and Joe Jonas as his bro.

Is Lauren Bacall still moving around?
Or Dench or Maggie Smith?
Betty White is also a good choice.
Or Angie Lansbury!

Maybe it adds nothing (unless you count the "seductive temptress" part of the metaphor), but it doesn't take anything away either, CurtainPullDowner. And after the success of the revival, which sparked the new activity, a female Leading Player is most likely what the target audience will want to see, by and large.

How about Faye Dunaway as Berthe? She's the right age at 72 and she could handle that one song.

Please be kind.

I guess this means people don't think Dunaway can be likable or funny in a role.

Ouch!

I think she has been likable in many roles and funny in the few in which she was given the chance.

I didn't think Martha Raye was likable or funny in the role.

But I will just disappear and lick my wounds.

She had a smile a mile wide.
Go lick.

I'll revive an idea I proposed in another thread -- in the original Fosse production, sex was a barely concealed subtext to everything that happened in the show. And it was watching Martha Raye's rendition of the role that convinced me one had to go a slightly different route with the role.

Watching her deliver the lines about frolicking and "I know what I need, Pippin" caused me to go back to the script and re-read it. It hit me that there is the barest hint of innuendo in the lines, and in reading it, I wondered if maybe Berthe was supposed to be sexier. Maybe Fastrada didn't exile her from court because of a personality conflict, but because she was a threat in the seduction department. The fact that her scene of telling Pippin not to worry about life because there's no point to it, so just enjoy it, leads into the frightening orgy that grows out of "With You" only reinforced my point to me.

So... in the movie in my mind, I decided to maybe cast the role in a way that would up the ante on that. It needed to be someone that you don't think grandmother of when the name is mentioned. Someone who is clearly old enough for the part, yet still looks like a knock-out. Someone who could give an extra charge to those lines, suggesting that Pippin's immediate family aren't the only messed-up ones. To be blunt, and excessively crude, for a moment, someone who turns around and her tits nearly hit him in the face, y'know? Where you're struck with the stateliness and voluptuousness of the person, but they're older. A fitting legendary actress/singer from a generation or two back.

Here's the list of possibilities I came out with:
* Debbie Harry. (Shockingly she sneaked up to the right age.)
* Linda Ronstadt.
* Raquel Welch.
* When I initially thought of Dolly Parton, it was a joke, but the more I thought about it, she seemed kind of right for what I had in mind. I began picturing a country singalong "No Time at All," a great surreal moment not unlike her fantasy sequence in the 9 To 5 film... Berthe in a cute little cowgirl outfit, fastening Pippin to the chair with her lasso as she lectures him and the film audience about letting her sing the verses.
* And last but not least, the inevitable "safe" casting choice. Someone that the suits would insist on for the "funny old lady with vim, verve, and charm" part twenty seconds after they heard about it. It doesn't really hit the hallmarks of what I planned, but if she resurrected her Sue Ann Nivens sensibility, Betty White could work.

I agree with your take on the role, g.d.e.l.g.i.

On that note my first choice for the role is Chita, she would be hilarious as a "dirty" sexy old lady.

Liza, Rita or Dolly would be spectacular as well.

Chita's already done it, and though she is very sexy and luminous, I'm not sure it would translate onscreen.

Great, you turn TLP into a female sex-pot, and now Berthe is a full bussomed senior citizen?

Irene Ryan is spinning in her plot.

I really wish they would let Andrea Martin reprise the role. She's utter perfection in the role.
