Piven on 'Speed-The-Plow' and Mercury Poisoning

When all of this was going on I liked to think that he was not faking. And I still feel that way. I believe him. So, yeah...I'm one of, what, three?

Count me in as number four, Edna Turnblad;I gave him the benefit of the doubt on this one.

But there is something so innately "prickish" about Piven that even when he is telling the truth he comes off as a bit of a con and insincere.

There is also a distinct desperate quality to the interview. I love when he starts "singing" at the end.

I'm glad to see some people on here taking up for him. The Piven-bashing when this happened was ridiculous and made the people doing the bashing look like idiots.

I believe he was sick, but I can't believe he was that sick. He can say he wasn't going out every night, but there's photographic evidence that he was jetting off to parties all over the world right after he quit the show. If he really had been that sick, he wouldn't have been doing that. Also, he comes off as a huge jerk, but that's another story.

He does seem jerk-ish, especially in the beginning of the video where he keeps saying "yeah." I was sure he was just going to say it the entire video.

That "jerkish" quality is why he is so successful at playing Ari Gold and just about any Mamet character.

Just like Alice Ripley is successful at playing crazy.

See, I'd believe him, except, he can't even get his story straight in that interview.

One time, he says, he slept right up until he went on.
Another, he says that he was eating until he walked on stage.

Sounds highly suspicious to supposedly be eating and sleeping at the same.

How did HE "grow up" on Biggie Smalls? Did anyone else find that odd? I mean, he was in LUCAS, for Christ's sake!

In regards to him partying and chasing chicks after his sushi debacle, "I guarantee you would have heard about it if it happened" .

WE DID HEAR ABOUT IT PIVEN. The tabloids were full of those stories, which is why so many people do not believe you. What a bunch of bull. Hes just like Ari. I mean can you think of another role this guy has done that doesn't resemble Ari Gold? He just plays himself.

"My God, he is never going to shut up about this, is he?"

I don't think it's his fault that he was asked about it. That's like not liking a song that you once loved because the radio DJs keep overplaying it.

That's a really bad comparison. Besides, did you really buy his "shocked, shocked" reaction that he was asked about the incident? That's all the interview was about.

Do you seriously think that he didn't know that?

I'm not buying it. The way that everybody connected to the show reacted to this "illness" by basically calling "bullsh*t" in no uncertain terms is pretty well unprecedented, as far as I can tell. I'm sure that if he'd been really ill, and had really alerted them to this before he even started the show, that the whole situation would have been handled far more gracefully than it was, with expressions of sympathy and goodwill rather than remarks about Piven's future career as a thermometer.

The best comment on the situation is still David Mamet's initial statement:

"I talked to Jeremy on the phone and he told me that he discovered that he had a very high level of mercury," David Mamet told Variety. "So my understanding is that he is leaving show business to pursue a career as a thermometer."

It's not his fault when he's asked about it, but I've seen him deliberately bring it up on his own, too. To the point that a lot of times I think, if this were really true, he wouldn't be trying so hard (and desperately) to get people to believe him. And one could argue that he just wants people to know the truth, but he has this air of needing to "prove" things. And you wouldn't be so deep in this proverbial hole if you were telling the truth in the first place. Plus, he always changes his story and I never believed him in the first place.

The thermometer comment is still my favorite, too.
