I love Zen Palate (vegetarian) on 9th, mid 40's. There are a few in the city...you can google to find the exact address.
And I second Jr.s....really good food. (but its noisy)
Beware: the Food at Ellens is awful. You go for the waiters.

Since you're on a theatre board, if you don't mid spending soem money, get to Sardi's. It's lined with caricatures of theatre people and the cannelloni is heavenly!
Angus McIndoe's right across the street from Phantom. It's pricy but their chicken is delicious! I've gone there before, after and in-between shows and have never had to wait for a seat, despite it's convinent location!

Though I didn't start the thread, I've been taking notes for my upcoming trip to NYC. I've bookmarked the websites for many of these restaurants and plan on visiting several of them. I love Italian, so its going to be tough to decide between Maria Pia and Becco. Would love to hear from those who have visited both.
I also adore and love Pastis...on 9th and Little 12th in the meat packing district.
Also if you like macaroni 'n cheese...S'mac is good and fun. It's all different kinds of mac 'n cheese. Lower East Side off of 13th (I think, may be wrong...)
Empanada Mama's on 9th
Lime Jungle on 9th
Both in the 50's (street-wise)

i highly recommend maria pia. went there for my birthday and the food was amazing. the atmosphere was very comfortable as well.
EL QUIJOTE at the Chelsea Hotel on 23rd ST & 7th Av.
Great atmosphere, historic landmark, great LOBSTER specials every day, and delish Spanish seafood and fish. Incredibly reasonable, too.
(Open Xmas day, go about 3-4 pm before it's packed)
FRANCISCO's (similar, but on the other side of the street, between 7th and 6th.)

I'm going to stay in NYC for a week and was looking for a list of places to eat.
Has anyone been to the Life Cafe recently I've never been but hear its a fun place. Hows the food?
I am staying right across from the Ritz Carlton hotel in an apartment.
Are there any good places to eat around there?

One of my favorite places ever. Now every mac n cheese I eat will be compared to theirs. It is a must everytime I'm in the city.

If you are looking for something quick, delicious, and healthy, then go to PAX. It has custom salads, wraps, pizza, subs, assortment of drinks, fruit, etc. I ate there atleast 3 times. The Pizza and Salads are to die for! And its fairly reasonable (for NYC)
also, the tuscany cafe near the Majestic Theatre is very good and cheap.

Thanks for bringing this thread back! Info will come in handy when in NY soon.
I guess you also made a lot of posters here SO happy for not starting a "new thread" about this subject

Japanese Ramen Noodle Soup Joint, with other yummies as well, Curry/Pork/Chicken/or rice, Katsu Don, Gyoza, Teriyaki chicken, Beef Sukiyaki, Kim chee, Fried rice, beer, Flat noodles/veggies, Shrimps, Egg Bowls, Yakitori
etc. Casual and fun. Been going to this joint for 25 yrs. The boyfriend, back then, dragged me every Japanese joint in town. This place, however, does not serve SUSHI. Shucks!
Cheap!

Europa Cafe seems to be virtually the same thing, so if you can't find a PAX, it's an option.
As far as pizza, I really don't get the draw of John's. Had it. Meh. I'd rather have Famiglia's or Ray's.
I definitely agree with vynl though. YUMMY!

Bubba Gump Shrimp Company in Times Square
Oh please, Bubba Gump is a tourist trap that has mediocre at best food. Think Hard Rock Cafe but for seafood. Yuck.
2nd Avenue Deli!
It's on 33rd Street and 3rd Avenue. Just take the S train from Times Square to Grand Central, and walk down to 33rd.
It's the best Kosher deli in Manhattan. And whether or not you're Kosher, you'll appreciate the delicious food!

when i get back, im goin to Junior's for a turkey rueben!!!!
At the corner of 50th and 9th is Roberto Passon, a very good and very reasonable restaurant. Not just run of the mill Italian, they have some wonderful dishes (love their slow cooked rabbit served with polenta for $18 or the pumpkin ravioli with sage and asparagus for $15, for example). I believe all but maybe one entree is under $20.
But even better is their amazing three course $13 lunch. Not just a couple selections, but a wide range in each of three course categories. I was shocked that my starter carpaccio was a huge plate of sliced beef mounded high with arugula tossed with lemon emusion, covered with full slices of pecorina, and then the entire think drizzled with truffle oil. This starter could easily be $15 or more at most restaurants, but here it is included as a starter in a $13 lunch, which I followed with grilled salmon and sauteed spinach, with tomatoes tossed with sliced garlic, and followed by a saffron creme brulee. Frankly, I don't know how they do it for $13.
Wow, sorry if this sounded like an advertisement. It isn't -- just my favorite while I'm in the city.
