Planning a NY trip. What are the "must sees"?

I have not been in 2 years. My daughters love Wicked so that is a given.

What else? They are 20 and 18 years old so we are not really limited by rating (although I don't want to see anything really over the top).

Grey Gardens is about mothers and daughers (albeit dysfunctional, but loving ) so you might want to check it out. It will surely be a Tony contender. Your daughters are old enough to enjoy it and appreciate its complexities.

A Chorus Line might be a great show for them as well.

I just wanted to give to some serious props for exposing your daughters to theatre. Bravo, mom!!!

You might want to venture into the land of off-Broadway as well. Our last trip, we saw three shows there for the same about we had to cough up for the Broadway equivalent. You also have the advantage that the casts seem to work a lot harder and the material is less mainstream and therefore more enjoyable.

No idea what to suggest; I'll leave that to the mavens here. But from an economics POV, it's worth checking out.

I don't think there ARE any shows that are "must sees" right now.

AVENUE Q is certainly wonderful, though.
I can't recommend THE COLOR PURPLE or TARZAN.
DROWSY is good, but if your kids aren't hard-core theatre fanatics, skip it.

I don't know when you're going to be here (as far as what will be open then), but there are some exciting things opening this season - some moreso than others:

Hairspray
(I adored Grey Gardens but it is a very dark musical. A must see in my opinion but I don't think I would have felt that way at 18.) It is a must see for the older crowd. Don't see it if you are single and regret it in your late thirties or over.
It made me cry. Especially, seeing it with my Mother. VERY DEPRESSING!

Strongly recommend Drowsy Chaperone. It exceeded every expectation I had when I saw it in August. The entire cast is phenomenal, I loved every second of it.

Hey - don't go to last year's must sees - go to next year's! NYMF opens this weekend, and they have great shows. I've only seen a couple (the ones that are coming from London) but there are tons, and they're only $20 (if you're taking your daughters, you might not want to fork out hundreds each night). My recommendations at NYMF: "Gutenberg! The Musical!" (had a total sell out run in London in January, great reviews, and they've put in a new american cast for NYMF); "Have a Nice Life" (a bit more serious, but the composer, Connor Mitchell, is truly fantastic); and I've heard amazing things about "J.O.B. The Hip-Hopera" (the title puts me off, but the song demos, plot, cast and LA reviews are wonderful). Go to www.nymf.org and book 'em.

Hairspray is hilarious and your daughters can see Diana Degarmo and Haylie Duff since they probably know them. Don't forget the stage door for autographs and quick chat.
