Dave Poland's take on Polanski's possible involvement from back in January:

January 22, 2010
Bad Idea & Bad Exclusive
1. Roman Polanski directing God of Carnage - Rarely has a great director seemed more wrong for great material. This is a dark social satire of people exposing themselves bit by bit... a comic variation on the disastrous Polanski take on Death And The Maiden. Really, Mike Nichols should direct it. Nora Ephron would be a fascinating choice. But Polanski? No.

"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

I was also surprised that Polanski is doing the movie since I thought this was definitely more up Nichols' alley, though I guess Mike Nichols is supposedly more interested in AUGUST: OC but I'm not even sure what's going on with that project.
Still, I'm really curious to see how this turns out, CHINATOWN is a brilliant film and more recently GHOST WRITER got great reviews. I do love the idea of Laura Linney in this, not sure about Kate Winslet though, she could definitely pull it off but she isn't the first person to come to mind. I'd love to see Toni Collette as Veronica and Laura Linney as Annette, that'd be pretty neat.

"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"

Those great reviews of Ghost Writer were lies! That movie was interminable.

I think Ghost Writer is about neck-and-neck with Toy Story 3 as the best release of the year so far.

Really? I just kept trying to figure out how old Olivia Williams's character was supposed to be. And Kim Cattrall flouncing around was fun. The rest of the movie felt torturous.

To answer an earlier post, yes I quite liked DEATH AND THE MAIDEN.

"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

I did, too, Borstal. It kinda freaked me out the first time I saw it.

I'm mixed about Polanski. I wish he would do his time, because I can't excuse what he did. But I can't deny his talent, either.

So where does that put me ... or him?

Put him in jail AND let him direct.

But I'm not giving him a free pass, ever. Not for that.

I loved DEATH AND THE MAIDEN as well. maybe he can get Sigourney in CARNAGE. I bet she'd be great in there.
