Poll: Worst Broadway Show of 2016

As I explained in my review, it takes the serious issue of child rape, and turns it into a star-driven exercise in showy acting and goosed-up dramatic tension.

Thats not at all what happens

Poll: Worst Broadway Show of 2016

Do you care to elaborate? You seem to be rather dismissive of my opinion here, and I'm not sure where that's coming from.

My main problem with the show is the character of Ogie. He came across as an intensely creepy stalker in the first act, and I was hoping he'd be treated as such in the second act, but he actually gets to marry the object of his stalking. I found that pretty repulsive. (I know I'm not the only one to have that reaction, since it's been discussed elsewhere on the board.)

Less offensively, many of the characters seemed like clichés and a lot of the humor reminded me of a very stale old sit-com. I did like the music a lot, though.

I think you must be implying, by your comment, that I didn't like it because it wasn't written and directed by white males. You don't know me, of course, but that claim wouldn't hold up to scrutiny.

"

OMG -- THANK YOU for saying this. I guess I didn't see the earlier thread. I am an older white male, so guilty as charged, and I "enjoyed" the acting, the enthusiasm and the music, and the singing. Especially the singing. It's a chick-flick brought to Broadway, and I accepted the basic plot as such and had a giggle.

But as a lawyer who has represented women trying to escape abusive relationships for 30+ years, I found several of the men to be scary and terribly drawn characters. What's the difference between Jenna's husband and Ogie? Both are demanding controlling characters who abuse or threaten to abuse their mates. You found Ogie's promise to "never go away" funny? I didn't. I suppose his threats are taken for sincerity of affection. Jenna's husband was just the same way. Except that you can see him become physical, and Ogie just does a dance. Of course, Ogie is still courting -- maybe in Act III she'd come home and find, um, Groundhog Day for abused wives...?

One last thing -- and I apologize for being a hijacker.

The denouement of the show is that Jenna wakes up in the delivery room and decides that both her husband and her lover need to go away and let her just raise her daughter by herself. Yeah, right on that again.

There are battered women shelters across America filled with women who tried to do that with that kind of husband (or lover). And there are many more millions of women who continue to stay in abusive relationships, or spend every day looking over their shoulders trying to just stay safe.

I know Broadway is fantasy, and that's not bad. Like I said -- I enjoyed the show. But, still.

Thanks for listening -- and letting me get this off my chest finally.

Oh good god almighty... if THAT is that you got out of the show, you clearly missed the whole point.
