re: Possible cast replacements for The Color Purple

Anika Noni Rose as Celie
Lilias White as Sofia
Heather Headley as Shug

Any thoughts?

Anika would be a BRILLIANT Celie! Sophia is supposed to be Celie's daughter in-law, and considering the fact that Lillias White could be Anika's mother in-law I don't think that would work. Heather would be a kick-ass Shug. Even though it's a replacement gig, I think this would be a perfect showcase for her voice. But I really want Elisabeth Withers-Mendes to stay with PURPLE as long as possible.

Oprah would never do the show in a million years, and if she DID want to be in it they would put her in whenever she wanted to be in and not when sales dropped.

Michael, what roles did those three audition for? I am guessing all three were for Shug Avery? I know Deborah Cox also auditioned for Shug...

In regrards to my suggestions for replacements, the only name I can think of that hasn't already been mentioned is Sharon Wilkins for Sofia (on the ASU boat, Nikki James would be a fantastic Nettie.) Brenda Braxton would also be a killer Shug Avery.
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

re: Possible cast replacements for The Color Purple

Anika Noni Rose seems too young to me. I would love to see Heather Headley be in The Color Purple. That is the casting I would like to see. Kenita deserves to play Celie. I am intrigued by Nicole Leach. I haven't heard about her since Nefertiti's failed tryout. I don't really want to see Jennifer Holliday or Lillias White playing roles.
Dean: Can I tell you something? Lorraine: That depends on what it is. Dean: I think you're really really pretty. Lorraine: (after a pause) Ok, you can tell me that.

Stephanie Mills as Celie? That'd be awesome! I would also love to see what Deborah Cox could do with Shug. Her Aida was somethin' else!

that is pretty cool Elisabeth got the role of Shug over Deborah, and all those other people...yeah

anyhow, I know Oprah expressed interest in being in the show as Sofia, but didn't because Gayle told her not to

saw it in a magazine

i like angela robinson, I want her to get bumped up when elisbeth withers-mendes leaves..not that much a EWM fan
she's very talented but her voice is the weakest out of everone which annoys me because shug avery is supposed to be a famous singer.

I would like to see Tonya pinkins as celie
and lilias is a great choice
Once upon a time I used to play with toys, but now I'd rather play around with teenage boys

Both Tonya Pinkins and Stephanie Mills are a little old for Celie if you ask me. They wouldn't be believable in the early scenes at all. I also don't think Anika Noni Rose fits Celie all that well either. She'd be perfect for Nettie, though.

I completely find it to be the other way around. I think Ms. Withers-Mendes has THE most gorgeous voice of any of the women in that show. Not to mention the fact that she has the 3 most gorgeous songs in the show, and she delivers them beautifully. Her voice still gives me the chills just listening to the CD.

re: Possible cast replacements for The Color Purple

I have to agree, Elisabeth is amazing and has a very unique voice. Angela is a dancer first and her voice is very nasal, I never like to hear her sing. But heh if you like that type of voice then more power to you. But out of all the understudies she is my least favorite.

Jennifer Holliday would bring down the house as Shug! Her voice has really matured well and I would be interested to see how she handles Shug's lighter numbers like "Too Beautiful For Words." I don't think there could be a better replacement.

How about Hattie Winston as Sofia?

"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter
