Pre-show announcements...
#0Pre-show announcements...
Posted: 1/6/06 at 11:31pmDoes anybody know who writes and records them? Is there a lot of money behind that? I know that DRS is obviously John Lithgow (I assume that will change soon.) But it now seems that they are getting creative with the pre-show announcements (ex. The Light in the Piazza).

Posted: 1/6/06 at 11:35pmI thought DRS' pre-show announcement was just, "There is no pre-show announcement. Thank you."...I don't think they'll change it just because he's leaving if that's the pre-show announcement itself.

I assume that people involved with the show write and record the announcements.

I like the pre-show announcement for Hairspray. I haven't been there in a while but it's something like:
"Hairspray takes place in the 1960's when there were no cell phones..."

Yes, the pre-show announcement for Hairspray is Corny Collins saying "Welcome to Hairspray which takes in Baltimore in 1962, a time before there were cellular phones and beepers. We hope we can travel back to that time when there would be none heard during the performance"
LOL--can you tell I've seen it a time or two???

Posted: 1/7/06 at 12:51amWhat I want to know is: Why do people still chuckle when the announcement asks people to unwrap any candies they might need during the performance? They've been saying the same thing for ages, and it wasn't even funny the first time I heard it.

I'm kinda partial to the MAMMA MIA announcement, I know its dumb, but I still laugh every time! It just makes me happy that they warn you about the usage of GO-GO boots!

Posted: 1/7/06 at 6:44pmI love the pre-show announcement for Piazza. It's all on that paper that they give you in the playbill that says "Is your cell phone off?" only it's in Italian.

I know you give you the paper, but I don't think it's in Italian... as far as I remember only the announcement is in Italian. I guess they didn't want to confuse us too much.
#16re: Pre-show announcements...
Posted: 1/7/06 at 6:51pmThat's what I mean. The paper is English, but the announcement is in Italian. They say the exact same thing, though.

Posted: 1/7/06 at 6:52pmI love DRS's announcement. I also like Spamalot which I'm going to quote horribly but its something like.."during the performance, feel free to let your cell phone ring as much as you like, but know we have heavily armed men with spears on stage" or something like that which I probably just mutilated. I also like how Spelling Bee incorporated everything into the Bee.

Posted: 1/7/06 at 7:10pmI think the pre-show announcement at Chita's show is best: there *was* no announcement. If only that kind of crowd were more popular...

In the tour of "Forbidden Broadway", they say "Ladies & Gentlemen, in order to take you to Forbidden Broadway we must remind you that the taking of photographs and the use of recording devices is strictly - fine with us!"
Just goes along with the humor of the show...

Posted: 1/7/06 at 7:29pmI think DRS has the best one ever. It's the only pre-show announcement I can recall off the top of my head, and that's because it's the only one I ever found funny...

- i laughed when they said (at Jersey Boys) "now is the time to unwrap any soothing lozenges" that's just because i always laugh at the word lozenge! :)

You guys know that for all Lincoln Center performances, they include that pamphlet in the playbill. Its not just because the accouncement is in Italian. LITP's announcement is possibly my favorite in recent years because it actually tunes you into the show, makes you listen more carefully but is also humerous!
