I would say generally- opening nights bring out the most famous people if quantity is what you are after. Otherwise, famous people- who love theater -go whenever they feel like it and it fits into their schedules- like the rest of us.

Depends on the show’s buzz and their schedules. NYC based actors frequently attend previews whereas non-NYC based actors will attend a preview while they are in the city doing press (talk shows) for a project. The previews period of HAIRSPRAY was enormously popular with celebrities.

"Famous" people are typically invited to Opening Nights. Higher-profile or star-filled shows will usually draw a more prominent Opening Night crowd. As the above poster said, there will sometimes (not always) be a higher volume of celebs on an Opening Night. Often the Opening won't be on sale to the general public.
Remember: just like you, they're there to watch the show, and the LAST thing they want to do is speak to a fan!
