Is this not the most hilarious lyric ever?
"But I know he'll appear / Though I seem a bit bipolar / And I'm a vandal now as well / Hope he won't mind / I'm a find, I'm a catch / And a very gifted bowler......"
Makes me giggle every time. Because Sutton hits us with the 'bipolar' line and then the 'bowler' comes out of nowhere. Love it!
Any other "stuck for a lyric" thoughts?
Cole Porter - "You're a melody from a symphony by Strauss..." - Strauss never wrote a symphony in his life; so he was obviously stuck for a rhyme for Mickey Mouse
Strauss wrote two symphonies.
I love this thread.
How can she be a gifted bowler if she's locked in a tower?
I find that song offensive to bipolar people. This thread is racist.
Plus, if someone is manic or depressed they won't show up on league night. They wouldn't have the discipline to become a fine bowler. Fiona lies and the song makes no sense.
I hate when writers use the term bipolar or schizophrenic to denote some cute, quirkly character trait. Its a mental illness jackasses.

I'm still astounded these lyrics won the prestigious Kleban Award (the year before Shrek debuted), the only award given to an outstanding lyricist whose lyrics have not yet appeared on Broadway (Lindsay-Abaire's plays obviously had which made his winning even MORE controversial, the award was designed for struggling up-and-coming lyricists).
This thread is awkward.

This thread is a LOL.
And I always thought that the "bipolar/bowler" rhyme had more to do with Lindsay-Abaire desperately trying to rhyme "bipolar" than anything else.
That original post can't be real.
In support of the OP, I believe I understand what this thread is meant to be.
My guilty pleasure is WICKED. In the song DEFY GRAVITY, Elphaba's Act 1, show-stopping closer, she sings, "I'D SOONER BUY DEFYING GRAVITY..."
...What that...?...
If one thinks about it, the lyric meant like, "I don't buy that explaination." "I don't buy that excuse."
But still... What the...?
The lyric immediately before is "If that's love, it comes at much too high a cost"
Put them together:
"If that's love, it comes at much too high a cost
I'd sooner buy defying gravity"
The grammar is a little stretched (you can buy [believe in or subscribe to] the concept of defying gravity, but you can't buy a verb), but it makes sense conceptually.
A lot of people like to take the Wicked lyrics out of context and ridicule them, but most of the writing (not all, but most) is actually clever and makes sense in the context of the song and the world of the show.
I agree EponineAmneris. I cannot stand that lyric.
BETTYBOY,
I've been diagnosed as VERY Bipolar, and I find the lyric hysterical. It may be offensive to you, but how is it racist considering that Bipolar Disorder is not race?
Great Thread!
Anyone else bipolar?
I don't understand why a lot of people bring up that "Defying Gravity" lyric. It's just a play on words (is it a pun?). "Love costs too much, I sooner buy this". Sure it's not genius by any means, but it's kind of clever...
ChiChi-I was really just kidding. Maybe you aren't familiar with my sense of humor. :) "This thread is racist" is just a quip that gets thrown around on BBW. It's a pretty clear indicator that a thread is going to the dogs.
I have a sense of humor, really I do.

Oh. Well then I apologize if I were an arsehole! Afterall, I AM Bipolar...LOL
I'm also bipolar. Yay!...? lol I love that lyric, but the bowler line ALWAYS struck me as odd. They just needed something that rhymed. It happens.
Surely the post about being offended about the bipolar reference was a joke right? But is there anything that can be said that wouldn't seemingly offend someone?
This thread makes me happy. :)
I loved Shrek. A lot. I don't care if it was a kids show, or cheesy, it was super cute!
I Know It's Today is one of my favorite songs. I think it's just so cute. But I have often wondered, too, how Fiona can be a gifted bowler when her whole life she has been in that tower. haha.
But my friend came up with an alternate lyric that I think is classic for Sutton to sing. "I'm a find, I'm a catch, and a very gifted belter!" haha.
