coming home from college in afew weeks...
Wanna see some shows
Going to See "Phantom" for the second time that week
Should I see "Promises, Promises" or "The Addams Family"
any discounts out there? particularly for Addams?
Are both shows Frequently at TKTS on weeknights?
If you are going to choose from between those two shows only, my clear preferance would be Promises 2. Yes, I've seen both. But as a college student,if you're willing to expand your horizons a bit, I suggest that "A Little Night Music" would be far more rewarding than either of the two you mention.
If you've got the time, see both! Kristin and Sean are soooo wonderful in Promises, but the addams faMILY (NO MATTER WHAT THE REVIEWS SAY) will make a fun night out at the theatre.
Use discount codes and TKTS and you should be able to catch both!
No contest: A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC.
Plus you can get great seats with their student rush.
If those are the only two you'll consider, go for "Promises, Promises"...sitting through "Addams Family" was miserable for me. I couldn't stop pitying the poor actors on the stage who have such terrible material to work with. I also couldn't figure out why there were actually people laughing.
"Promises" is far from perfect (I don't think it's that well-written a show, book or score), but I think it has a lot of charm and I've enjoyed it each time I've seen it. If you're doing student rush, the seats are far back, but you should have a good full view of the whole stage.
I would also throw in "A Little Night Music" as another option.
If you have to choose between only those two shows, then "Promises, Promises" for all the reasons given above! It's not perfect but a delight anyway and fine singing and acting (Sean Hayes is absolutely charming -- I would see Kristin Chenoweth in anything she does -- Katie Finneran steals Act II).
I didn't hate "Addams Family" as much as others but I do feel bad about all that talent wasted. I am glad I went and did have some laughs (mostly due to the superb Nathan Lane and Jackie Hoffman cracks me up). A well acted and performed show with mediocre material.

I've only seen "Promises," but given what I've heard about "Addams, I'd stick with "Promises." Sean Hayes really surprised me (I figured he's be funny, but it's really an excellent, excellent--yes, times two--overall performance) and Katie Finneran completely lives up to all the hype surrounding her performance.
The show does have some dead spot and Kristin's numbers (not her acting) all seemed off to me, but for the most part, the show's a lot of fun.
For true magic though, "Night Music" is the way to go.
If those are your only two choices, then definitely Promises, Promises. If you're willing to expand your horizons a bit, I would highly recommend A Little Night Music or La Cage Aux Folles.
The Addams Family has two great stars in a really mediocre show. Promises, Promises has two mediocre stars in a really mediocre show. I'd go with The Addams Family.
PROMISES, PROMISES. For sure.
The Addams Family for sure. So much (wasted) talent on the stage, but it's still there - when are you going to be able to see 5 multiple Tony nominated actors in an original musical? (Well, ..Breakdown I guess too Lol) Lippa's score is a wreck, but the book while still pretty bad is funny & enjoyable.
I would only not recommened Addams if you're a staunch Addams Family (TV/movies/etc) fan, because it's not very Addams-y. Still enjoyable though!
I haven't seen this production, but I did see Addams Family and between the Bacharach score and Neil Simon's witty book I'd bet Promises, Promises is a sure bet. Plus, you'll see Molly Shannon yuk it up live on stage.
Echoing the others, Promises is a FUN night out. Sean was really terrific. So much more than I expected and the choreography is really fantastic.
I saw Addams and it's just okay. My least favorite of the revivals running.
I would say, in order -
La Cage - It's just STUNNING. Loved it.
Promises
Night Music - As wonderful as the two new leads are, I'm just not a fan of the show itself.
Addams
I would say Promises, Promises because the show is closing.
Addams Family will be open as long as Bebe and Nathan are in the show.
