That year was crazy! 1984 they paid homage to Herman and Sondheim and you can still see both I'm pretty sure online.

The 1984 show included a tribute/career re-cap for Kander and Ebb as well. The reason they decided to showcase all 3 composers was that each had a new show that season (THE RINK,
LA CAGE and SUNDAY) which gave a great build up to the numbers from the nominated musicals. Only problem was THE RINK didn't get a Best musical nomination (BABY did), but they still did "Wallflower" and "The Rink" from that show.

In those days CBS allowed the Tony telecast to run over (I believe it went to 11:30 that night) which allowed them more air time for "entertainment." Today with the extra commercial time and the rule that they have to be off by 11 pm, we have about 2 hours and 12 minutes to give out all the awards, make speeches, handle introductions and play numbers from the 8 nominated musicals.

My earlier suggestion was to have the presenters just come out and do a short bit from each song and then segue into whatever award they are presenting. (This would be instead of the usual mindless/scripted banter.) There are a couple of natural hooks too with SUNDAY and GYPSY being nominated this year and expected to present a number.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

I still think they need to do a nice tribute to him and let some of his best known work shine...

Send in the Clowns - Judi Dench
Being Alive - John Barrowman
You've Gotta Get a Gimmick - Tyne Daly, Bernadette Peters & Patti Lopne
Move On/Sunday - Daniel, Jena and the Cast of the new Sunday...

oh the dreams I have for this!

"Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around."

"You've Gotta Get a Gimmick - Tyne Daly, Bernadette Peters & Patti Lopne"

Talk about a gimmick! (One that I'd certainly die to see, BTW!)

"Who is Stephen Sondheim?" -roninjoey
"The man who wishes he had written Phantom of the Opera!" - SueleenGay

GO CARDINALS!!!
