It does make sense that the actress playing Elphaba walks right off. And, I can see how they can use the light/where the performers are located to make it look eiather smaller or close up.
I had assumed that she (actress playing Elphaba) just walked off. When I saw the tour that is what I had thought because there are no trap doors.
I didn't realize that they started using this practice on Broadway as well.
The actress in his picture is Teal Wicks, the L.A. standby.

Yes, it's Teal. (Love her)
And it was fun to watch her melt.
Yeah it is not a projection. If you watch the projectors (located on the sides in the tour) there is no light from them till the tornado. aswell, they are to close to the scrim to make an image that large, and that way. Also, the light in the back to create the shadow effect would disrupt the image, so you wouldnt see the projection. It's all done by real people, moving/crouching

I thought this was kinda cute...

I always wondered if someone really does play Dorothy. In that video, Wicked ensemble member Briana Yacavone (loves her!) shows a picture of when she played Dorothy. Pretty funny how whoever's playing Dorothy has to have the pigtails, dress, basket and everything.
So I guess it's not a projection.
I hope that poor girl got another gig after The Pirate Queen
I imagine it would be safer, especially after those two incidents marked. I feel like because of the projection being the main vision, it would be fine for Elphie just to walk off stage, or sink to the floor, no trap door involved- and then like slide off stage..
I believe it originally was a trap door effect and has since changed to projections.
Having said that though, I have seen the show from extreme house right and I did see a cast member as Dorothy coming onstage. But that was already years ago, and could have changed since.
Check out this audio/video of Idina talking about the night of the injury to shed some light on how it used? to be done.

"I thought Stephanie's only injury/injuries were sustained in Toronto when she was being lowered in on wires for the beginning of "No Good Deed" during tech rehearsals. "
Elphaba get lowered in now? Since when?
And also, when did Julie Reibler leave L.A.? I saw her when I went and she was the best over Stepanie (05) and Eden (04).
Dshnookie- Briana has been back with WICKED and, from what I've been reading, has been on for Nessa this past week.
Brave Sir Robin2- Julie left WICKED at the end of last year I think. I never saw her as Elphaba but I did get to hear her sing "The Wizard and I" at an event in Glendale once, and she was great!

The way I understand it, since they couldn't be sure there would be a trap door for her to rise up from at the start of "No Good Deed" they were going to fly her in on a broom, and that was when the malfunction happened.
So, does the actress playing Dorothy wear red or silver shoes???
I would imagian that the actress playing dorthy wears red shoes.
And yes, due to the fact that they were not sure that there was going to be trap doors in every theatre for the tour. They were going to have her fly in on her broom. This is where block got hurt on tour and where Eden had to replace her. Since then this was replaced with the actress playing Elphaba just running on stage for the beginning of No Good Deed. Having recently seen the show on tour and having seen the Broadway version a few times ( I live in NYC) I have done a good job of figuring out the differences between the two productions.
I get the opinion that they drastically changed the way the melting is done due to the fact that Idina broke a rib. It seems that all the technical stuff that they change they change because someone gets hurt.
They had to change the way the melting was done because Idina broke a rib.
They had to change the enterence for No Good Deed on tour because Block hurt herself during the tech rehersal.
I wonder what it is they will have to change next.

The girl who play Dorthy wears the dress + wig + make-up in the off chance that the scrim falls, which apparently has happened a few times in the west end. If that happens, they just continue to mime the scene as if there were water in the bucket and Elphaba is melting. I'm not sure how they do it now with Elphaba just running offstage, I guess they just hope that the audience stomach's it like when they have her run on stage when the DG lift fails.
I'm not sure if Wicked it the most dangerous set, as much as it's is the most highly publicized show (on sites like this), meaning every little flub is instantly on 10 message boards.

The actress playing Elphaba will have to climb a ladder while singing Defying Gravity.
Block got injured in Toronto during a tech rehearsal before the tour ever opened. For some reason after the accident they decided to cut the flying effect completely rather then remedy the (computer) problem. (Block was held by 2 wires, one of which started moving, the other did not, causing the injury)
Kristy Cates was flown in from the NYC cast to replace Block in Toronto. She opened the tour as the first Elphaba. Eden replaced Cates after the initial Toronto run (I believe).
I LOVE Kristy Cates. She is the best Elphaba I have ever seen. Her "look to the western sky" sent chills up my spine. I would give anything to see her playing Elphaba back here in Chicago.
Cates was flown in then Stephanie came back for the official opening in Toronto. Stephanie played the next two stops (Chicago and LA) but the doctors told her she need to take off to complete her recovery so Eden took over of the San Fransisco stop and then after Stephanie went back in Denver can continued to the end of her run on tour
Oh wow you are right, I totally forgot that I saw Block in Toronto after I saw Cates!
