Question after seeing “Dear Evan Hansen” last night...

I didn’t search too extensively to see if this had been discussed before so my apologies if that is the case...

So, last night I went to “Dear Evan Hansen” and I have a big question... If you havent seen the show and dont want spoilers, you should probably stop reading now.

During “Requiem”, I feel like it is implied that Connor may have sexually molested Zoe. The line “don't say it wasn’t true that you were not the monster that I knew” seems to have something a bit more sinister to it, but that could just be where my mind went.

Thoughts?

Dialogue in the show suggests that he was more emotionally abusive ("Trying to punch through my door, screaming that he's going to kill me for no reason".

A very important aspect of DEH is the dichotomy of reality versus illusion, from the perspective of the synthetic world of social media. Connor was a deeply troubled, emotionally abusive drug addict who was a burden on his family and terrorized his sister, but he still deserved love. He didn't deserve to die. Evan's lie about Connor tries to idealize him as a tortured soul martyr, but Evan was the one who tried to assert that Connor deserved human decency. I really doubt that Levenson, Pasek, and Paul would be trying to get us to sympathize with a child molester.

I figured that could be it. I think it’s the fact that Zoe seems to show such disdain for her brother that makes me second guess it.

I think you’re reading into it further than it is implied. If they were alluding to anything of that nature I’m sure it would have been directly addressed, given the show.

I figured this may be the case. I was more interested to see if anyone else shared the same thoughts.

I got that vibe too when I saw Mallory Bechtel's performance but not when I saw Laura Dreyfuss's. I don't think Levenson/P&P intend that interpretation to be "canon," but I also don't think it's weird that you picked up that subtext.

I saw Mallory’s performance as well so maybe it’s more just how her take on the role comes off?
