Question on selecting a closing weekend

Why did N2N choose yesterday for their closing performances? Do successful shows try to stay away from each others last moment in the spotlight? If ALNM did not close last week, would N2N have chosen it instead? Thanks.

Im thinking N2n probably chose yesterday because it was a holiday weekend so they knew they'd get the people in for the last week who may have been staying in NYC over the 3 day weekend.

I think Marin and Jason were contracted through the middle of the month.

"If ALNM did not close last week, would N2N have chosen it instead?"

I don't think when A Little Night Music closed had any influence on when Next to Normal closed. Many a time have multiple shows closed on the same day.

A lot of factors go into determining when a show should close. Often shows may decide to close at the end of leads' contracts. If the show didn't recoup yet, it may also be a money issue; financially would it make sense to keep the show running for another week or two? Finally, timing is also a factor. A show may be doing well in the present, but do advance sales look great after a major holiday? This is why a lot of shows close in January right after the holiday season.

Contracts don't matter either. As long as the actors either have 2 weeks notice (or are paid for 2 weeks) then they producers have met their obligations.

I'm abour 99% sure the length of time is 2 weeks, but even so the notice is what matters. They wouldn't be able to fulfill EVERY person's contract.

Look at Jan 2nd's closings. I believe there were SEVEN shows that closed.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I would say "Next to Normal" has more crossover fans with "In the Heights" which closed last week than with "A Little Night Music," just based on the number of tweens at the final performance. I don't think selecting a different closing date than everyone else is as important as selecting your own opening date so that your review gets the press its entitled to. Also, Next to Normal announced its closing way before most of the shows that closed in January ("Bloody Bloody," "Women on the Verge," etc.).

Sorry this post doesn’t really apply to the original subject I was actually surprised that there were way more tweens at the N2N closing than the ITH closing. I definitely noticed the N2N crowd was super young but I didn’t notice that at all at ITH. Which I was surprised by due to N2N’s mature subject matter.

not that this is the reasoning at all, but I think I read before the closing notice posted that Marin and Jason were contracted through the 16th and also the show opened off-broadway on January 16th, 2008. Just some weird coincidences.
