Question on upcoming trip

I have a quick question regarding an upcoming NYC trip. We have tickets to a couple of shows but have some free time where we may try and see a matinee or evening show on the day of. I haven't been to NYC in a few years, and back then there weren't many options outside of tickets in advance, lottery, cancellation lines or same day TKTS. I feel like there's so many more options out there now (TodayTix, StubHub, etc.)

We would typically always do TKTS if we didn't have advance tickets, but with so many other options out there now, what is your preferred method for getting cheaper tickets during a trip?

After using TDF (of which you have to be a member), I rely on discount codes found on Theatermania, Playbill or BroadwayBox. You still buy your tix through the official ticket site, so can pick your own seats.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I do rush/lottery either directly with the show or thru TodayTix as my first preference. Obviously the cheapest and I have rarely gotten a seat with a view that wasn't at least manageable. I don't qualify for TDF so if I don't get rush/lottery tickets, I'll use TKTS. I pay a little more there but have gotten some amazing seats. Occasionally, for off-Broadway shows, Groupon or Goldstar might have a good deal as well.

Hard to help with a strategy without knowing the shows you're thinking of seeing...

That said, going on no information, I would recommend using discount codes BUT just go to the box office when you're in town, a few hours before showtime, or at least on the same day. I've been given the same discount as online, but with seats they would never let me select myself.

If the show you like DOES let you select decent seats online with a discount code, then do that online and spend your time in NYC doing other things than trying to secure tickets.
