I'm going to San Diego in about a month for work. My evenings will be free and I'd like to see some theater while I'm there. I know San Diego has a fairly solid theater scene but I'm not knowledgeable at all. Are there any specific companies/productions that will be running end of October/beginning of November that I should put on my radar.

Also, how far is La Jolla Playhouse from downtown SD? I won't have a car so it would be by cab or Uber, unless some kind of public transport exists.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

The Sound of Music tour will be in town November 15th - 20th. There won't be any tours in town in October because San Diego Opera has the theatre for their production of Cinderella. October Sky will still be playing at the Old Globe through October 23rd and then their annual production of The Grinch opens on November 5th. Miss You Like Hell with Daphne Rubin-Vega will be at the La Jolla Playhouse October 25th - December 4th, though I don't know much about that musical yet. The Old Globe is easier to get to from downtown than the La Jolla Playhouse is. The playhouse is probably about a 20 minute drive maybe 12 miles from downtown. I'm not sure how much that would cost with Uber but it's certainly easier than public transportation as you'd have to take the trolley and then take a bus the rest of the way to the playhouse, though you could Uber from the trolley station. The Old Globe is only 2 or 3 miles from downtown. It's definitely easier to get to by bus. Specifically in the downtown area, San Diego REP is performing Disgraced October 20th - November 13th if you like plays. Their lobby is still undergoing renovations though as far as I know. The ArtsTix booth is also located near the REP across from the Balboa Theatre and the Horton Plaza mall in the new park area. You can get discounted tickets there.

If you're not in town soon enough to catch October Sky, I think The Lion runs through Oct 30th at The Old Globe.

Check out Diversionary Theatre. www.diversionary.org. Great local theatre. Lots of good restaurants and bars across the street as well. Enjoy your stay in San Diego!

If you see a show at The Old Globe, consider a dinner reservation at The Prado at Balboa Park and you can stroll to the theatre complex.  The surrounding park area is beautiful and well worth exploring if time permits.
