I agree with you, but Joey McIntyre isn't one of them.
It gets really tiring when "pop artists" are grouped generally into not being able to act or handle roles. Sure, a bunch of them really aren't that great, but some of them really can cut it. So not seeing a show because a "name" is in it, simply because they are a "name", is dumb. Especially when they have proven themselves as capable.

Posted: 8/15/04 at 5:24pmWhy thank you bogey! I try not to force my opinions on others. I just enjoy the theatre. I live in Denver but am active in the Theatre here and have finally gotten back to going to NY to see shows. We get a lot of touring shows here so I get to see a number of popular ones. AS for that newsletter....I don't see enough shows in NYC to start one!!!

Posted: 8/15/04 at 5:40pmokay i absolutely LOVE the show and i want it to stay open but none of these casts even remotely resembles the OBC, the casts seem to just get worse and worse as time goes on, and i'd much rather see the how go out with some dignity than try to salvage ticket sales by bringing in some stupid pop stars. I havent seen any of them yet because i had to leave NY for a couple months, but i just think that its sort of disrespectful to broadway itself to have the attitude that if you cant make in anywhere else, you can always resort to broadway. their are plenty of struggling artists out there that would give anything to have the parts that these pop 'stars' are getting just because they have more of a name behind them. well thats not what jonathan larson wanted. he wanted fresh new undiscovered people. not scarey spice, and not an ex-98* member. and though its hard to say this, if that is what this show has fallen to, i think it sould be put out of its misery to make room for something better

Posted: 8/15/04 at 5:48pmI saw a very good production here in Denver. I really wanted to see it when I was in NYC in April....but something told me to stay away. I may just try it out in the fall when I am there. But not if Scary Spice is still in it.

Posted: 8/15/04 at 8:21pmAs far as Rent closing, it appeared to be sold out when I saw it on 8/7. The cast was really good...minus Mel's strained vocals. But I heard that Tonya's voice is giving out as well and Daphne's was strained by the end...these recording artists just don't seem to have quite the stamina as the pros. And as far as big names...Jai made a great Angel. Not a fan of Joey's peformance or the whole boyband thing but I'm sure Broadway has some standards beyond a name (I mean who knows Joey from anything but NKOB anyway). And just because someone experiences some mainstream success doesn't mean they aren't talented. Of course Joey is no Norbert. I mean, hasn't Rent become mainstream in it's own right? I'm so terrified the movie is going to ruin it.

Posted: 8/15/04 at 8:26pmJonathan always wanted to be famous. A movie will accomplish that. I've decided not to condemn it until I've seen it. And when I do go, I'm going to try to enjoy it because it will be what it will be so I might as well give it a chance.

Posted: 8/15/04 at 8:29pmi've decided to think of it in a new way. if you go and you are disaponinted on how it is nothing like the musical, enjoy it as a movie and forget the broadway version of rent for two hours!

Posted: 8/15/04 at 8:42pmI just hope the film is done well. I don't expect it to compare in the least to the show but I just hope they don't cremate the premise or the passion behind Rent. As for fame...is it all it's cracked up to be? I liked what Fredi said about Jonathan missing the commercialism that came with even the Broadway transfer and the "rage".

Posted: 8/15/04 at 8:58pmThat film won't be the same without the original cast. Seeing it is questionable on my part. Give credit where credit is due though... Jai wasn't famous till AFTER RENT. He was just trying to make it like everyone else. In my opinion, that's what RENT's good for at this point. With exception to the pop stars, RENT is a good outlet to put something on your resume and get yourself seen.

well said, but i hear they are cutting out songs and using widely known pop artists for most of the main characters! i dont want to sit in the theatre and think 'o thats christina agulara' i want to be able to think 'wow the person who plays mimi is very talented, who is she?'and i dont think its right to butcher something that doesnt belong to you without the concent of the owner. in this case jonathan is not able to make that decision, so they should just use the musical as it is. theres absolutely nothing wrong with the way it is written now. there are plenty of movies over 2 hours. take any one of the lord of the rings movies for example... if they can make those movies so long, then there should be no need to cut rent short

When is Mel B. leaving? And is it worth it for me to see this current cast or would it be an injustice to the memory of the show?
I have never seen ANY production of it and I was thinking about seeing it in a month...but if this isnt a good group, I dont want it to ruin my idea of the show.
Is it still worth it? Or should I try for something like POTO for a Monday night show?

Posted: 8/15/04 at 9:55pmYou're not very up-to-date, nodaybuttoday2. Columbus has turned down popstars and is screentesting the broadway cast. He's also been going to the show often. Columbus intends to stay true to Jonathan's vision, he's said so in several interviews. If you're going to gossip, be current. Updated On: 8/15/04 at 09:55 PM

Millie, go see a matinee, Mel B doesn't do them. You'll get to see my personal favorite Mimi, Dominique Roy instead.
The current production is overall blah, but I am a harsh judge and I've got a lot to compare it to. I reccomend seeing the tour when it comes closer (which is quite a ways off) if possible, but you could give the broadway cast a shot.
