Posted: 9/7/04 at 3:19pmWell, that's their right, as long as they don't annoy anyone else with it (a la Wickedite). I couldn't see anything more than once every few weeks, personally. I love Rent to bits, but variety is the spice of life, especially with the current production being what it is.

Because it's bad.
You haven't seen Matt Caplan, have you? Even a backstreet boy is better than him.

Posted: 9/7/04 at 3:35pmmatt caplan is GRATING. I want to throw Mark's video camera at him. I saw him on teh tour and I couldn't stand him at all. the only thing that made that show worth watching was joshua kobak.

Posted: 9/7/04 at 3:39pmThe Rent producers, it seems, can NOT go out and find good talent. Now, all they do is reccyle teh same people again and again and throw in one or two new people on occasion to change it up breifly. They can't even bring back the GOOD/GREAT replacements like Jim Poulos, Michael McElroy, Sherie Rene Scott......

Posted: 9/7/04 at 3:42pmYes, they are convinced that b-list old celebrities like Mel B will bring in all kinds of profit... why not try for fresh new talents like they always said they wanted?

Posted: 9/7/04 at 3:43pmExactly--they say they want fresh talent but just put in people who are tired of the roles they're playing. As for Mel B, she didn't even bring in too much more business than one would have hoped--during her run they were in the high 60%-low 70% attendance.

Posted: 9/7/04 at 3:45pmThat's because no one likes the spice girls, 98 degrees or N'Sync anymore. The people who will go see Rent want to see it because it's supposed to be a little more off the beaten broadway subject-matter path, and it's hard to take stunt-casting seriously.

Listen, can everyone PLEASE stop bitching about this? It is beyond annoying at this point. Okay, RENT is not the first show to use stunt casting, nor will it be the last. Nobody knows what Drew will be like, so why complain? Everyone can't always be happy, so i'm sure there will be people who hate him, but he's not there for good! Jeez. Second of all, people have been calling RENT a "disgrace" ever since the OBC left and it is getting VERY old. Anyone remember people bitching about Marcy Harriell and Sherie Rene Scott?
I haven't been to the Neder since March, but I was damn impressed with the show, as was the RENT-virgin who was with me. The people who complain about the current cast are the people who have seen the show 50 damn times (i've only seen the show four times, twice on Broadway, thank you very much) So of COURSE the show is going to seem stale and old when you keep seeing the same damn people in it every week!! You can't see it with new eyes. As long as new people are coming to this show and coming out impressed, that's all that matters.
Ok, now i'm sure Namo and others will jump in here and tell me how stupid I am and how I need to "expand my horizons" and how RENT isn't "hip" anymore, and then i'll probably leave this site again because some people act so damn elitist. But whatever, I don't really care. It feels good being back to defending my show =) ::steps down off soap-box::

Posted: 9/7/04 at 4:00pmHey I think Rent is still "hip" and all that jazz. But when you're bringing in someone who doesn't have the range whatsoever for a part, it can get somewhat excessive.

Posted: 9/7/04 at 4:25pmi'm pretty sure alot of the recent posting about RENT has to do with just the fact that it just needs a bit of tightening up... do you know i STILL haven't seen this show, but enjoy listening to the OBCR every once in awhile...

my opinion. right now it sucks, but it sucks to the extent that the only 2 options for it are to get better or close. At this point I really dont care if it closes. Ive seen everyone on broadway as well as all the tours except for a few understudies since the show opened. thats how much i loved it. but it seriously has lost some of its charm... I'd rather listen to the OBCR in the comfort of my home than pay money to go see this pathetic attempt at the show. its being butchered beyond anyone's repair. I give them all credit for trying but its really not working

As a closet optimist, I have to believe Rent can be fixed. But it won't be easy and the producers obviously aren't heading in that direction. I don't know what I want for it, really.
"The people who complain about the current cast are the people who have seen the show 50 damn times "
I've seen it as many times as you have. And I think it sucks.

::looks under desk and throws objects at NoDayButToday:: take THAT!!
No, seriously, you proved my point. You saw the show a bunch of times, and now you're "over" it and see the production as stale. What you see as "butchering" the show, a lot of other people see as TALENTED performings singing great songs. It's fine if YOU don't care for the show anymore, but that doesn't mean there aren't some DAMNED talented people on the Neder stage every night. After all, they're on Broadway, and we're not, so, it's pretty easy to be critical, huh?

Posted: 9/7/04 at 6:18pm'Over Rent' Princess, how dare you? I could never be over Rent, I still go through withdrawl if I'm separated from my OBCR for more than twenty-four hours. You don't know me at all and stand in no postition to tell me what I like and don't like. I have seen the brilliant tour groups and fell in love with them, and was sorely disapointed with the Broadway version. The things that immediately come to mind- Jeremy Kushnier's Glory (twangy and melodramatic) Matt Caplan in general (annoying and distracting adlibs, not to metion the way he holds some notes out unecessarily) and a truly uninspiring ICY:R.
