RENT SCREENPLAY

Okay I realize this is late but...YAY for rehearsals starting! I've been vicariously hyper all day long just thinking about it...I *really* need a life
I even wore my Rent dogtag in honor of it today (NOT that I ever take it off, but ya know...)
Anyway, I have to make myself stop thinking about whether or not they will come back. It's weird, because before this last summer I hadn't even imagined that they *might* be at all accesible, and now it's like I have the right to it.
But anyway...shall we have an actual discussion?

Posted: 11/29/04 at 4:30pmWhat do you think about the placement of Gay Marriage in the screenplay.
YAY#377
Posted: 11/29/04 at 4:33pmI like the concept, but I don't quite think it works for Maureen and Joanne. I don't really mind that it makes the show more in the present; I think that the time period is ambiguous enough that it could be. However, I don't really think Maureen would agree to a commitment like that. I think she's both too insecure and too flighty. It really doesn't fit with her character. I'd almost rather see a discussion of gay marriage with Collins and Angel...I think it would fit better with the characters.

Hey now, I don't even get a reaction to my brilliant last post?
So, um...if *you* were writing your *own* version of the screenplay, what would you do differently/the same?

No...just ff.net people.
I have a little bit more if you want it though...mostly just the end of the song. Not very interesting.

Done.

So nobody answered my question...

Posted: 11/29/04 at 5:45pmIf I were writing my own version, one thing I'd add is Contact, like in the Chbosky screenplay. Even if it is just Angel singing karaoke at a bar, I think it needs to be in there, as it is Jonathan's work. I'd cut the whole orgy part probably, but I'd definately keep Angel.

what question? the one about the screenplay?
i'd put contact, christmas bells, and halloween back in...
EDIT -- and you'll see. taye wants to sing. no, taye NEEDS to sing. i will die if he doesn't

Posted: 11/29/04 at 5:50pmI don't think You'll See would work too well on screen, honestly. Although, I do agree Taye needs to sing...

The whole gay marriage thing.... you know, I think it's nice that Columbus wants to make a statement on society and stuff, but at the time, was it really as big an issue at the time? It's been almost nine years, and I feel like Rent is becoming more and more of a period piece; it's not something that you can easily stick stuff that's relevant today into without it seeming out of place.
Whatever. I don't know. *sigh*

Posted: 11/29/04 at 5:51pmOkay, so then put back HNY and let Taye sing in that. I agree that You'll See wouldn't work sung onscreen. There are some songs that are real "songs" and then, because it is an opera, there are other songs that are "dialogue songs." The dialogue songs need to be dialogue. It simply doesn't seem real otherwise.
