If she can keep her calling out down, I think they might keep her. I agree she brings a lot of life into Maureen and what a voice!

I saw parts of the movie on encore, needless to say I didn't care for it. Especially during the scene in the restaurant with the song. How they were singing about religion, than they sung about something that was perverted.
. Than again, it's based in NYC, the city of sin.

"I am always appauled at how sloppy and amateurish Michael Greif's direction is. Why does this man have anything resembling a career?"
Well, I am rather appalled (yay, spelling) by your almost unreadable spelling and grammar and your consistently unintelligent negative reviews. If you were twelve and naive and all positive, I'd forgive the lack of intelligence you convey in your posts, but (wait, how old ARE you?) all you do is brutally slam people as if you somehow could do better. Nothing intelligent about it. Hell, I agree RENT is in sad shape right now, but damn, you could learn how to express yourself better.
I think Namo's right about the connection between looks and how much you love a performer.

i would also like to add that i highly enjoy Rent.. with a capable cast.. and i would love to see what a more capable director and design team could do with the materical. sadly, i think if anyone tried to fix any of the inherent flaws in the materical, there may be mass explosions of rentheads' brains....

I'm not a big on the Rent-bashing either, simply because I enjoy the many merits of the work and it really was an important show for me personally as a teenager right at the time it came out and was still relevant. I don't think the material or direction is as bad as many claim, nor is it as good as others love to claim. It's solid theatre fare, dressed up to sound like rock music and infused with themes and characters that just seemed so cool 10 years ago.
Aside from the natural aging of the show, I think things really started to go wrong when they stopped connecting with the audiences and began pandering to them. It's stopped feeling organic and spontaneous and is almost patronizing at its worst. They don't seem to treat their current audiences as if they have any intelligence or taste, and this may be self-fulfilling to the poor first-timers who are just excited to be there after idolizing the CD for years and years. This is destructive and an unfair misrepresentation of something so iconic which has clearly "jumped the shark"
BTW, how is NYC the city of sin? THE city of sin is Vegas, and NYC hardly even qualifies as A city of sin. there is plenty more sin to be found in most urban areas at considerably lower prices than here. it's all moot anyway since sin is a false concept. there's right and there's wrong. sorry to get off-topic. I just wonder if this is a serious poster with real opinions or it's some sort of parody.

Has someone posted something on this board similar to this? I’m surprised if they haven’t.
Despite grammar and spelling, he does have a pretty good point. The show is at a horrible stage right now, and they won’t clean it up because;
a) They’d probably be scared to because of Larson’s death
b) It’s making a s***load of money because of that damned movie
c) What more can Grief do? Seriously. I think he did a bad enough job to begin with
I think Rent is a brilliant piece of art, but it’s been almost destroyed by lackluster casting and lack of ability and/or enthusiasm from the casts. They don’t want to be there, and that’s obvious, but from being in that world for many years, the Rentheads seem to form halos over anyone who plays any role. I’m not necessarily saying they’re stupid, I’m saying that… well, they’re sort of brainwashed.
I really can’t listen to the cast recording, and I think when I saw it with Christopher J. Hanke a few weeks ago will be the last time I see the show. I guess there are a bunch of bad memories, and the state of the show right now… well, I don’t think it’ll go anywhere but downhill.
Tired… grammar… bad…
