As much as I am against Spiderman on principle, this is PERFECT.
I couldn't agree more.
I'm not sure I understand the concept of building a musical with a budget so big it can't recoup...and I had no interest in seeing this show...but with Cumming in it, I might have to reconsider!

Hope Cummings isn't as stoned as he seemed to be on the Tony Awards several years back (Threepenny mess). That catty remark aside, except for Cabaret, he always seems to be playing the same part. Also, Riedel's comment re: Manhattan Theatre Club and Lincoln Center was totally out of line. Both have made valuable contributions to the theatre and shouldn't be dismissed by that smart-assed jerk. Go back to McAdue's Michael and stay drunk there.
It does seem stupid to say "oh, money isn't an issue, but we're gonna pay the actors ****."

Well, what exactly does Michael Riedel know about valuable contributions to the theater?
He writes: "He's a good choice, although I fear theaters around the country will rush to put on festivals of plays by his close friend Tony Kushner in the hope that Rocco will kick a few grants their way," and says it like more Kushner is a bad thing. So, really, the answer would be nothing. What he said about MTC, RTC and The Public was really not cool, though.

Cumming is completely wrong for the "Norman Osbourne" side of the character. He's too young and not believeable as a middle-aged workaholic.
I believe him as a middle-aged alcoholic!

Casting Alan Cumming in Spiderman, even though I think the show would be a bomb, I would go see it for Alan!!
Alan, despite looking great, is in his mid-fourties.
Hell, Alan in anything makes me excited
I thought nothing outside of rave reviews could make me see Spiderman, but Cumming in it could.
I agree with PiraguaGuy2. I see him as the villain, but as the "normal" side of the character, I feel he's a bit too young.
This will either be a great show or a huge dog
Bottom line is that whichever it is it will probably be beyond the budget of most theatergoers - especially if we are still in a downturn.
Taymor basically unrestrained is something like Michael Cimino who was given the combination to the UA bank vault after "The Deer Hunter". The result was "Heavens Gate" & it took down United Artists in the process.
Cumming as the old comic-book version of the Goblin, which I imagine this show, would pretty much represent, would actually be perfect. I mean, tell me you can't see him as this:
I'm not a fan of Spiderman becoming a musical at all, but I have to say Cumming is a good choice to be Green Goblin.

This makes me smile. I wonder if Alan Cumming would actually do it, though.
