i wonder how this board will react when Rock Of Ages gets a tony nomination over shrek or Next to Normal.
And also what its reaction will be when the show is still running in 5 years.
Great TONY review. That will very much help the financial success of the show.

IT'S NOT GOING TO RUN FOR 5 YEARS.
It is making a little over 200k.
That is good for about a 2-3 month run.

oh THERE you are...where have you been when all the raves came out? We missed you.
anywho, have you seen that they raised their tix prices?
and do you notice that when shows get RAVES from the nytimes, ny1, time out ny, AP, Rolling Stone, amny, etc.. usually what happens is they run for a long long time.
2-3 months? you think rock of Ages is going to close in June?..aww you are cute.

By the rate they are going, they will not be open for a long time. Spring Awakening got good reviews, it closed.
It is fine if you want a show to run for a long time, I know I do. It keeps actors in work. However, you all need to come back down to reality and see that by the rate ROA is going, it's going to be a flop.

LOL. spring awakening was open for two years and recouped its entire investment and made money for its investors
Did you see the "rate" that spring awakening was going before it opened? it was running at 40%. got good reviews and climbed to 98% with $90 tix prices for a year. why am I even conversing with you. Its like talking to a small child about big people stuff.
I don't think you have a clue about how this industry works.

Actually, the producers have said the show has a $7M price tag; their projections have them recouping in a year. Even at an avg of $250K per week, they will recoup long before that. After that, they expect to give investors a 67% return. Do the math. I'm quite certain they have a hit on their hands.

massofmen- YOU are the small child. You never listen to anyone's opinions. You only post about ROA.
AND IT'S NOT GOING TO WIN THE TONY...GET OVER IT.

You need to remember, starlight, that the 250K is not going toward re-couping. It's paying the CURRENT bills. It is used to pay salaries, rent, advertising. That can't even cover their nut at that rate....so NONE of that money is going toward re-couping yet.
I'm not saying that it might not start making more money, but if it doesn't it will not be able to stay afloat long enough to reach that year.

I don't think i said it would win the tony. I think i said it would get a nomination though. And i love how you responded to my post with emotion and feeling instead of logic and empirical data. You are wonderful.
dramamama you need to look at the trend of sales. It's been climbing steadily since it began previews. This is called, "a good product". Remember, selling a Broadway show is a marathon not a sprint. You have to build the word of mouth for the show, build on the INCREDIBLY good reviews, raise ticket prices slowly so as to not scare customers away.
And the operating costs have to be very very low concerning the size of cast, small set and a 6 piece band instead of the usual 13. And of course they have a reserve so as to cover costs when it is under during previews. I am sure the producers knew they wouldn't make costs while avg below 40 dollars a tix. But look how its climbing each week. Slowly. This show is in it for the long haul.
And again, remember that the movie comes out in a year or 2. Do you think they would close the show before the movie opens nation wide? Please.

And I can comment on whatever i want. Just because I am more interested in this topic than talking about Guys and Dolls doesn't mean I am less intelligent and knowledgeable. :)

...and you have to consider that some of those sales numbers will have been affected by giving tickets away to the invited press....

Anyone who thinks Rock of Anuses is going to get a best Musical nomination is clearly only working with a brain stem, and not the rest of their gray matter

I feel like very similar comments were made not too long ago in anticipation of reviews that many expected to be over whelmingly poor, which turned out not to be that case.
I dont think it requires much brain matter at all to entertain the idea of a show that was recieved well might get a tony nod. Stranger things have happened. Personally I dont have much of an opinion on the issue because I am sorely behind on my theatre going, but if and when I catch up I'll be sure to weigh in.

I had no interest in seeing this show either but I got a free ticket for a preview. I had a wonderful time and thought the show was crazy fun!!
It won't get any Tony noms but I'm guessing it will have a healthy run.

"In a Broadway season with only one new hit musical ? "Billy Elliot" ? the rousing reception accorded to "Rock of Ages" is particularly noteworthy. The well-reviewed show, which opened Tuesday, uses hits of 1980s rock bands to tell the tale of a young buck from the backwoods (Constantine Maroulis) in the big city and the doe-eyed girl (Amy Spanger) who spurs him on to fame and fortune."

Rock of Ages is a fantastic combination of great casting, fabulous production values (some of the best costumes on Broadway - Gregory Gale and terrific lighting - Jason Lyons), inventive choreography by Kelly Devine and the aforementioned rock score. It somehow all comes together as an unexpected exciting entertainment with tongue firmly implanted in everyone?s cheek.
