ROMY & MICHELLE....a musical?

So I am a little surprised that millions are being spent to develop this as a stage musical. The film was a hoot for a red hot minute when it came out, but as far as quality goes, let's face it - the screenplay makes THE WEDDING SINGER movie look like CITIZEN KANE in comparison...
I could see this being popular in high schools or colleges. Not so sure about commercial Broadway. Has anyone been to any of the readings and can comment on the quality of the material?

I'm pretty sure this has a pretty big cult following. I was obsessed with this movie when it first came out and it still remains one of my favorite comedies today mostly due to the amazing comedic performances turned in by Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow.

I'm all for the movie being adapted as a musical, but... the two girls they've cast as Romy and Michelle are in their early 20s (and look even younger.)
Considering the entire plot revolves around a ten year high school reunion and the anxiety the two leads feel about what they haven't accomplished in the past decade, it's a baffling choice.

Love AJ Michalka as Lainey, Barry's girlfriend on ABC TV's 80s based comedy THE GOLDBERGS. She plays a high school student and at 24, looks convincingly like a 16-17 year old.

I saw this at the Rockwell in LA. AJ and Stephanie were excellent. I think they are both perfect for the roles, so I was able to overlook the age disparity compared to the movie.
It definitely needs some work but this show definitely has potential to move to Off-Broadway after Seattle. It's hard to imagine this on Broadway but that's not because of lack of talent.

I think this has the potential to be an Off-Broadway success, like Heathers. I also don't see it on Broadway, but I think it could be great regionally too.

They've posted a song clip. The style and character are giving me flashbacks to the "Wedding Singer" musical.

I actually have one degree of separation from Stephanie and she's older than you think. I don't know her exact age, but she has a daughter, she just happens to look super young. Just a fan fact.

I'm flying up to Seattle to see it. I have the script and haven't had a chance to listen to songs.

I assume you meet Cortney Wolfson? She's currently playing Romy.

I don't think AJ is in it anymore. If you look at previous posts, they're from last year/previous workshops.

Another song clip is up. "I Invented Post-Its." Funny lines from the screenplay are set to uninteresting music along the line of Applause's "Fasten Your Seatbelts" or Heather's "Dead Gay Son."
