I've only read the play once, but I don't think she's wrong for it. I'm not really sure who I'd say is "perfect" for Karen, but I think Portman might be a good fit. I think it'd be more interesting if they didn't go the blonde bombshell route with this role. It's too obvious.
Why for the love of god does there have to be a VERY good upcoming fall season on Broadway when I am going to start college in the fall and won't be back in NYC until thanksgiving? This isn't fair.
Piven is a draw for me to see this and now Esparza is even more of one. I am really looking forward to this and All My Sons and Shrek the most.
little_sally, I don't think Boeing Boeing will be gone in enough time for Speed The Plow to take over. I remember reading that Boeing Boeing extended the run until I think January due to a boost in ticket sales after winning the Tony for best revival of a play.
I am guessing that if 13 is rumored for the Royal Theatre in the spring and Speed the Plow is having a short run then my guess is that there is enough time to set up Speed The Plow and then have 13 come in in the spring. Or, given the fact that this is a short run they could delay for a bit the planned renovations for The Belasco until Speed The Plow's run is done. Those are the only two ways I could think of for this show being in a Shubert house come fall.
Natalie Portman might be a good fit - although I am hardly an expert on the play itself. If Karen is supposed to be ambiguous - is she dumb or just playing dumb at each point? - it takes a good actress to pull that off.

Oh God, please not Natalie Portman
Keen, I was unsure of that as well. And honestly, I feel a little ignorant saying this, but my assumption reading it was that it'd be a director's choice how to "use" her, so to speak, and that she could go either way.
It's going into the Belasco. Previews start October 3rd.

(PS, the casting in that press release is backwards.)
If somehow Natalie Portman was in this.... I don't think I'd be away from 44th Street for more than a few days at a time.
