It's no secret that George Allen has a little problem when it comes to nonwhite folks. You know; the Confederate flag and noose he used to display in his office, his opposition to certain legislation connected with civil rights, etc. etc.
But it was his recent "macaca" remarks that truly led me to believe he'd be a fan of musical theater.
Well, one musical in particular; one I've been working on, called White Noise, about a white supremacist teen pop band that becomes a national sensation. Inspired by the racist singing twins who form Prussian Blue, of course.
So I decided to invite George Allen to the show's New York opening on September 18.
Here's the text of the letter my director and I sent:
August 17, 2006
Senator George Allen
204 Russell Senate Office Bldg.
Washington, DC 20510
RE: Opening Night Tickets For White Noise Musical
Dear Senator Allen:
We have been following your remarks on the campaign trail with great interest, particularly your recent use of the term "macaca". When we heard you use this word, considered by some to be a racial slur, or even a "code" word intended for certain of your constituents, we knew we had found a potential audience member who could truly appreciate our show on all levels.
We are the creators of an exciting new musical called White Noise, and we would be honored if you would attend the New York opening. White Noise is about a white supremacist teen pop group--inspired by the racist twin girls who make up the band Prussian Blue, with whom I'm sure you're familiar. It is a fun evening, full of pop songs featuring white power propaganda, and we think you'll just love it. There's no instance of the word "macaca" in the script as it stands, but if you were to attend, we would be delighted to work it into the dialogue, or perhaps even devote a song lyric or two to that word that's so familiar to self-identified white supremacists. Also, we would be thrilled to make a reference to the noose and Confederate battle flag you once had hanging on display in your office. Just let us know; we're here to accommodate you.
As of today, there are two tickets for our September 18 opening reserved under your name. If you're unable to make the opening (we know you're busy campaigning for your race, no pun intended), White Noise can come to you. Say the word, and we can have our cast sing some pro-white pop songs at any campaign event or fundraiser that we are available for.
Feel free to contact us, or just show up at 8 pm on Monday, September 18, 2006 at the TBG Theater on 312 W. 36th Street in New York City. We look forward to meeting you.
Kind regards,
Joe Drymala and Ryan J. Davis
I think it would be awesome if George Allen came. If you guys would drop him an email at his campaign office or at his Senate office, we might just get him to come out and enjoy himself. Who knows; he could even become a lifelong musical theater junkie.
Please, Senator Allen. Won't you come sing a song with us?
Um . . . I think this might be considered Off-Topic.

why is that? It's an invite to a musical!

How about sending invites to:
Sen. Joe Biden: “You cannot go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent ... I’m not joking.”
Hillary Clinton who remarked that Mahatma Ghandi used to run a gas station in St. Louis.
haha it's clear not only is this post taboo, it's shrill and retarded too!
Since this is inevitably going to be moved to Off-Topic, I might also mention that the guy who is running in the GOP primary against Katherine Harris was caught on tape saying that black people can't swim. The tape is out there on, uh, various Web sites. Like Wonkette.

Yeah. They are trying to out racist each other in the Florida GOP Primary.
Keeping on topic... Hairspray certainly has some progressive messages.. Who can name them?
At first, I thought this was a joke.
Guess not.
Does the band White Noise, in the end, get tortured and killed for being racist pricks?
Or does it end happily ever after?
Speaking of being taboo folkyboy, way to make an idiot of yourself by using "retarded"

You'll have to see the show to find out. The real band it's based on PRUSSIAN BLUE, is alive and well and gaining a fan base.. scary stuff...

I can't believe this thread has survived with the You Tube link and all....

Are youtube links not allowed? This isn't like a link to a copyrighted show. It's a public domain video... So - nothing illegal or unethical about linking to it that i'm aware of...

"Are youtube links not allowed?"
Uh . . . yeah.

This is true of not only obvious "bootlegs" but also ANY material protected by copyrights such as television programs, movies, etc.
Thank god I didn't post a link to any copyrighted material! Glad I didn't break any rules. I'm a rule fan.
While the material itself might not violate the rules, Ryan, the mods later clarified that they'd rather not have any links to youtube at all, because it's time consuming for them to have to check every link to see if it's kosher or not. So -- if you want this thread to survive, you might want to edit out the youtube link.
Yeah!
I read about Prussian Blue in Details, I think. Maybe it was GQ... or it might've been Insider..
Very weird girls.

It was GQ. You're right. Great article by Aaron Gell. The GQ and Primetime LIVE stories on Prussian Blue really helped us create WHITE NOISE.
Have you guys heard the demos from White Noise? Head over to our myspace and check them out myspace.com/whitenoisethemusical
rule police - is posting a myspace link allowed?
Good luck with your show, Ryan. You might try forwarding your letter to some of the liberal blogs that havge been covering the Allen remarks carefully, like HuffingtonPost, CrooksandLiars and DailyKos.
They might also see it as shilling for your show, but they may be more amused by it.

Thanks!
Yeah, we're all over dailykos etc... We just like to keep the theatre community informed about our theatre. The writer of White Noise and I met on the Howard Dean campaign. So we're really close to several leftie bloggers.

White Noise was one of the shows I was interested in seeing at this NY Musical Theatre Fest. I have faith in the organizers of the Fest that it is NOT about promoting racism.
How the subject is going to be handled in the piece is one of the things that interests me in it. I could only think of the "Tomorrow Belongs to Me" scene from Cabaret by analogy but that's only one scene in the play so this sounded like a challenge.

Exactly! You're right on. The shows tone is similar to Cabaret - "If You Could See Her Through My Eyes." Can't wait to hear your thoughts!
Obviously the show doesn't promote racism. It's satire...

I love satire. It's my favorite. And I already have a ticket to your show.
