Yes this thread is silly, but not for the reason you state nondeplume. You actually, kind of back up the op's insinuation: that because he wouldn't HELP them by being the face of this year's Tony Awards, they got mad and refused to nominate him.
It's silly, because there are at least a few people willing to believe that the nomination committee would be that sophomoric to get upset about it and take their toys and go home just to "show" him.
I'm sure that they get their requests turned down all the time.
In addition to not giving yourself a night off just to enjoy the evening, you are setting yourself up for scrutinization -- and that seldom goes well. What a huge responsibility to shoulder -- the success or failure of the broadcast? Yikes.
As darling as I think Radcliffe is (and yes, I would have like to see him receive a nod) I think he's be boring as hell as a host. Sweet and polite only go so far.
And as I've said in other threads, I doubt the host brings in too many new veiwers. Who watches award shows if they have no interest/knowledge in the topic? Even the average theater goer only sees one or two shows a year -- not enough to care about the results at all.
I like music...listen to it all the time. But I have never watched more than 5 minutes of any music awards show. Couldn't tell you any host of any one of them. Because I just don't care about it.
But you can't drag me away from the tv for the Tonys or the Oscars -- even when I think the slate is lame. Because that's what I love to following. Broadway is not mainstream. SO few of my students know about anything on b'way that either: Maybe I have 2 or 3 every year that pay attention to new shows and b'way buzz.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
